Default Need help diagnosing nitro rustler issue

Ok so the issue is this the truck just won't stay straight I have the trim and everything set well and shortend the end points so it isn't so quick to respond I also changed the steering curve so it's not so fast. It will go straight if I just gently use the throttle but the second I give it any ammount of power the back end breaks free and just starts blowing doughnuts. I can only have it going about 8 mph before this happens. When I look at the truck the back wheels are canted in towards the buggy chassis (toe in I think it's called). I checked the parts and all of them are good so I'm guessing this toe in is normal. This is the old rustler with the .15 in it. I have street tires on it and have been running it on the pavement thanks for your suggestions Jared

Check for any binding or play in the diff, shafts and bearings.
It is normal for the rear wheels to toe-in (veiwing car from above, rear wheels point in at the front), both rear wheels should toe-in the same amount. Also check suspension arms and uprights do not have excessive play.
Only other thing I could think would be a loose wheel (or missing drive pin/hex) and a unglued tyre.
If you are sure the wheels are pointing in the right direction then for some reason one wheel is getting more drive than the other.

This sounds like the clutch is grabbing and may need to be cleaned. Not hard to do pull off the clutch bell and inspect the clutch pads and clutch bell for build up.

The other thing you can do is loosen the Slipper Clutch a little so it does not grab right away. Mighttake a few tries to get it adjusted right but if the slipper clutch is a little looser it will help with your traction problems on pavement.

The Toe in is a non adjustable setting on the rear of the Rustler but the Chamber settings are adjustable. I would suggest for on road using a 90 Degree Chamber setting on the rear so both tires are planted square to the pavement. You can use a Square to check this setting.

if your radio is so equipped, you can also control the acceleration power curve/limiter (ATL) , this can adjust the way throttle curve is supplied by the Tx, you can have a slow power curve to half-throttle, then kick in, or vice versa.... MPB

My guess is he is probably running the AMradio that came with the Rustler and it probably does not have these settings. He may want to tell us what radio system he is using than we can use that information to further assist him..

Very good advice though because I have JRFM XS3 andSpectrum DX3CRadio Systems in my R/Cs than these sport radios allow for many types of adjustments.

All the above are good sugestions, first would be to check the tyres are not slipping on the rims and back your slipper clutch off so that its slipping and then slowly adjust it up 1/8 of a turn untill you get it where it bights resonably quick but still slips for the first foot or two from take off, I tighten mine till it binds then back it off one full turn and adjust from there once you get close to perfect slowly tighten it up a mm or two as I have found there is a fine line between slipping and too much bight. I had a simular problem years ago and it was a result of chipping a tooth on the diff gears (sun gears). If this was the case tho I would suspect you would hear a grinding sort of noise, plus feel it when turning the rear wheels by hand. I also regularly clean the clutch bell out with a bit of fine sandpaper. Also check the friction pins in the slipper clutch as once these wear so far no matter how much you adjust it it will either slip against the gear totally or bight totally. Doesnt hurt to run an extra set of friction pins either filling every hole rather then every second hole.

I would also suggest increasing the spring rate on the rear suspension with more spacers or thicker springs. If the suspension is too soft will have some affect on traction because when you pound the throttle the suspension will drop andnot put the weight on the tires. the factory shockoil isgenerally 40 W silicone oil increasing it to 50 W silicone oil will stiffen the suspension a bit since you mostly run it on road. Itwill slow the suspension down when taking corners and make it stiffer for on road driving. Another trick is lay the shocks down to the lowest setting on the shock towers andsuspension. This will make your shocks seemstiffer because of the angle it uses to corner.

Just another thought.
