Hi guys, when i scratch built my reeves 1/4 scale spitfire i used poster board cut to fit in the wheel well area (wheel cup),then fiberglassed over with 3/4 ounce cloth, using polycrylic,it worked great, ive also used this technique for other areas that were tough bends, and had no structual signifigance.

Okay that worked, here are some more showing gaps between wings. The wing is touching the fillets at the leading and trailing edges but not in the middle.

I built my fillets for my WM P-51 with the wing attached. Minor gaps.

Once its all spruced up and sitting on the runway you will never see the gap. I also use some thin weather strip between the fuse and wing to ward off chafing of the covering.

The SC stands for Super Custom..it looks exactly like the OS 120 and performs the same. Not sure how it compares with your motor but at 120 it should work fine.

Thanks for the information. It is not suprising but RCU has no information on the OS 120 or your SC 120 four strokes. The Saito 120 is a lighter engine than the Magnum and YS four strokes and comparable in weight with the OS 91 surpass with pump. Guess I will have to carrry dead weight on the nose again. Hate to do that but necessary at times for balance. Maybe you could supply RCU with information on the SC engine. I am sure all of us would appreciate it. Thanks again

Hi locolobot: In alphabetical order, ASP; Magnum; and SC are all made by the Sanye Machinery Co in China and all engines are identical except the name badge. If you want to know more about the SC 120 just read up on the Magnum 120.

Paul, My interest is in your Satio with the 3 blade prop. I have a 150 in my Goldberg Extra (duh) and want to try a 3blade prop, but never found one. I would like to know engine RPM's with that prop. Also, for information, I run a Satio 300 twin exhaust on my 150. Use the one that has the pressure tap on it....sorry, I don't know which side. That may eliminate you concern for wheels up damage....Larry

WOW!
There is a lot of info on this plane. I just purchased one last weekend at a swap meet, factory sealed box for $125.00, just wondering if I got a good deal.

Can you guys help me out on some stuff?

Are the Robarts really the way to go? It looks like a bunch of work - should I be scared? If it is I need a bill of materials.....

Has anybody put a retractable tail gear in this plane?

Does anybody know where I can go on the internet to find pics of the nose art for this plane? I went to the web pages in this thread and nothing really came up. I really don't want to name my plane "Bonnie".

Is this plane covered in Monokote from the factory?

Any other tips or help would be great!

First I think it's a real good deal for 125 bucks. The plane itself is a very nice flyer. I did use the original landing gear at first but later switched to Robart mechanicals but didn't think it was a great improvement. My wing collapsed under the landing gear after about 20 flights so I had to rebuild and strengthen the area greatly, you will want to do this from the get go. I feel the biggest improvement you can do is go with robostruts on the gear. My plane is 3 years old now and the covering is junk. it wrinkles real easy. I know the newer ones have a higher quality of covering on them

I think it is a newer version - the instructions say to use Lusterkote, so I am assuming it is Monokote. It looks like I will be doing some recovering this winter!

What Robarts did you use? Did you just do the mains or mains and tail?

Hey guys-

I am getting ready to start building this thing and have a few questions regarding some things I would like to do. I am somewhat new to the airplane hobby so any thoughts, answrs, or opinions would be great. It looks like I am late on this thread, but there is a lot of valuable information on this thread.

Does the 1/8 scale Top-Flite radial engine fit in this plane?

Has anyone used the cockpit kit for this plane?

I would like to put a tail wheel retract in it, which one do I buy? and do I need to run 2 retract servos and "y" them?

Should I use a Saito 100 or 120?

Where is a good website to find nose art for the P-47, the ones I find are mostly P-51's?

Where can I get bombs for the wings?

Yes!

If you do a RCU search on this model you will find a thread by an Italian fellow who did put the cockpit kit into his.

The Robart tailwheel is the only one I know of. I bought it for mine. And yes, two servos with a Y harness.

Should I use a Saito 100 or 120?
More power is always a viable option. And you will end up needing noseweight anyway for CG issues so it might was well be in the form of an engine.

Dunno. Sorry I can't help you here. I make my own.

Hobby Lobby.

Well...

I started the to install the factory retracts and wheel cups. The wheel cups that came with the kit were not the best quality in vaccum forming. I wrote to Global and they sent me another pair, these are not much better. Does anyone know if I can use the Hangar 9 wheel cups with the stock retracts? Or, any other ideas of finishing the wheel cups. I suppose I am too picky on how things look.

The Hangar 9 wheel cups are huge in comparison. So the basic answer is: No.

However, if you don't mind lots of cutting and modifying, then yes you can use them.

on nose art either make your own or visit the automotive shops (Advance or Pepboys) and see what kind of decals they have.

Well after giving this much more thought, I have decided to make my own wheel bays.

The plan...
Soak some balsa and rubber band them around a paint can
Make templates out of poster board to know where I need clearances
Tranfer templates to balsa and cut them out
Glue them in and finish with some Zinc Chromate colered paint and call it good.

I think this will look a little bit more "scale" than the wheel cups that were included in the kit, plus I can but a bigger wheel in - 3".

What do you think?

I think it sounds like a good plan. You will notice that you have to cut away a lot of the existing structure to fit the larger openings you are contemplating. I had too also. I did add some reinforcements back in to the wing though.

Hey Guys

Getting closer to completion!

What is the best way to put on the wing fillets? Should I mount them to the wing or to the fuse?

Anyhow, here are some pics
