BVM F-100 HERE TO BE METAL-MORPHED
Bob Klenke drove up from Virgina [X(] and dropped off the BVM F-100 he has been working on, its here to be Aluminum Plated with our process. Bob did some real nice detail work and I sure our process will help to bring out some of his handy work. I post pictures of the process like I'll did for Greg on his Sabre.

Thanks Rob, this is one large plane, at this rate I will need a bigger prep area in the shop We really enjoy working on the planes. I hope we can keep your interest while we get it ready for the fun stuff

RE: A BVM F-100 HERE TO BE METAL-MORPHED
Today we final got started on the F-100. We first have to get everything ready to be primed with a catalyzed primer, to do that we will be using a blast cabinet with 180 grit sand. We do this for two reasons, first and most important is that the sandblast will give a perfect etched surface for the primer and the second is that it is much faster than sanding by hand. We use low air pressure and with a fine touch with the nozzle the surface will be nice and dull and ready for the paint booth. I like to close off all the areas that are not being primed, to do this we mask off the area with a heavy masking tape.

At this point all of the F100 components have been media blasted, the next step is to get a light coat of catalyzed primer applied. Joe you beauty is on it way of being MORPHED to ALUMINUM [8D]

Wojtek-- yes, the pictures I attached show the area we will be using as a guide, we still have to discuss the amount of color variation with Bob K. and Joe but the process we will be using works real nice. We will be using metal dyes similar to gun bluing, to achieve the look after the area is plated in our titanium.

RE: A BVM F-100 HERE TO BE METAL-MORPHED
Finally got a chance to get some aluminum plated on the F-100. First we had to block off any areas that we dont want the metal to get into, we try to keep the weight to a minimum by installing thermal balloons
After the part is removed from the plating equipment, it has a black oxidation that needs to be removed. We use steelwool to do this and it only takes a few minutes.
After a light polish to remove the steelwool mark if looks just like it solid counterpart[8D]

David,
Ron will pipe in here I'm sure but what he told me was that it was much lighter than metal foil based finishes and even lighter than most paints. He said in fact, that a large part of the weight gain was from the primer he uses under the plating process and if he could get rid of that, it would be lighter than paint...

David Bobs right, this is one of the replies from the post on the F-86 we plated for Greg.
Bob I will posting more pictures soon, we have to get a few more projects out first but they are small and I will be back on the F-100 tomorrow.
Thanks Joe, things will move quickly now, still have the fuselage and wings to get into the plating equipment but all the small parts are plated and cleaned of the oxidation, I did a quick polish on the parts in the picture just to get things moving. We will do another test fit and I will take a few pictures.

Wojetek-- Our plating equipment registered 10 oz. TOTAL ( 2 oz. less than the lightning) and deduct another 1 oz. from the polishing process, but the primer even after sanding weighed in at 13 oz. Now all I have to do is figure out how to smooth out these models with out priming

Some progress on the F-100, shes been plated in aluminum and I have most of the black oxide removed, my P-47 is at the same stage, next both planes will be polished out. Boy the panel lines on the BVM really pop out now [8D] cant wait to see the wings with the secondary metal applied

Some more progress pictures, this is one of three polish steps I will give the F-100 and after I have applied the secondary metal for the Hot section and wings surfaces I will polish it again. This is my favorite stage of the process

RE: BVM F-100 HERE TO BE METAL-MORPHED
I too and looking forward to seeing some pictures of that F-86 Greg [8D]. I must admit that I have seen just a few and WOW [X(] is all I can say
Joe one thing I did notice on the F-100 is that the rudder was not very large for a plane as big as the this, I figure it might have something to do with all the power they have.
Thanks again
Ron

Thanks Vinny,
It sounds like you know Joe, did you meet him at a Jet rally or some where else? I think your going to like this F-100, if I remember correctly you too like detailed war jets. Did you ever get your Mig re-painted? and if so what color did you paint it? Vinny I was wondering do you still own that Roadrunner, that was one nice car.
Joe I will lay out the secondary metal today and see what you think.
