Default Favorite P-38 color scheme

I'm building a Yellow Aircraft P-38 and am looking for suggestions on a color scheme. I built a Royal P-38 14 years ago (my first kit build) in the red YIPPEE scheme. It is still flying today. I'm not sure if I should do another YIPPEE (very easy to see in the air and easy to do) or do something different. I was considering Joltin' Josie. My only requirement is that it has to be easy to see and not disappear in the sky! Pics would be great. Thanks for any input! Mike

Mike this is my yellow aircraft p-38. If you are looking to do a military color scheme like this i would suggest you find something with invasion stripes on it. That would make it stand out in the air alittle better.

For the Lightings you gotta go with the naked ones . (with out the high shine) The only builder IMO that knows how to correctly weather them in South Pacific scheme is Dave Morales out of Phoenix,Az. Both The P 38 (silver) & the P61 (OD) have a super flat finish, almost ever panel have a different shade......He is one master craftsman.

Looks good simple. The ones with fresh shinny paint, nose art, and kill markings just don't look right, or good IMO. I think it is pretty hard to go overboard on the distressing and weathering on these, from the pictures I have studied. It is very hard to find one in OD and sporting invasion stripes. But I do like the look. Many more had natural metal and stripes, it would seem. By then, they were coming over unpainted.

Yes, she was registered as CF-JJA. What the warbird registry misses: she ended up as LV-HIX in Argentina and crashed after takeoff, Ezeiza, Argentina in 1964

Can't help myself. I love this one. It was the 5,000th P-38 built. After all the publicty was done, it was stripped back to bare metal, and sent to war.

Alright Mike, here the promised scheme.

This is Virgina Marie - P-38J-15-LO of the 433rd fighter squadron USAAF
Boroka airstrip, Biak Island, Geevlink bay, Dutch New Guinea, October 1944

The Pilot was Lt.C. Robert Anderson

I got that out of a rare English Profile Publication printed in 1966.

This is a very nice color for a P-38, I never seen a giant scale painted in that color. If you are interested in a better scan I can sent it per e-mail. Pro-Mark or others do not have a problem to do the nose art and the stencils for you.

RAM3500, I agree - finding the combo OD and invasion stripes is difficult but when we were setting out on the project we ran across these and it just seemed right at the time.

P38Mike, I posted an interesting color at the end that may be just the right thing after having done Yippee.

G-Pete, That's a big Ghost Squadron smile (Are we P-38ing at WOR this year?)

You bet - closer to the event I will try to motivate the P-38 owners to com out there. It's rare to see a P-38 ..... how about 5 at the same time in the air?

There is a 1:48 scale model kit from Hasegawa of that P-38. If you can find one you can use the decal sheet to color match and copy to enlarge the graphics.
I would say the blue is like a sky blue for its day similar to the light blue used on Corsairs. Thats what would be most likely readily available.

Heres some stripes for ya!
it looks to be a photo recon variant because the guns seem to be absent on the nose. Typical PR color was a light blue.
