Default EPP Foam Wing - Landing on Pavement?

I just built a Unicorn 48" Wing, and it looks pretty good, and I would like to keep it that way.

For my situation I have access to three different landing sights. 8" weed stubble, dirt, or paved street.

Quesion 1) which of these sites should I shoot for on my first flight?

Question 2) has anyone ever tried a skid or wheels on these wings for pavement landing?

Thanks in advance,
Larry

I'd shoot for the weed stubble. A little extra cushion for a hard landing. All three choices will scratch the wing eventually. In a short time it will be irrelevant because you'll be able to catch it and it will never touch the ground.

Good luck Dan

How sharp is the stubble weed compared with the dirt - which would scratch the model least?

I'll second that - try catching the model - it's not as crazy as you may think.

Enjoy the Unicorn - it's a fantastic model.

Go for the weed stubble. If it is 8-inches long you should be okay.

I sometimes land mine in grass 8" - 2' high. Sometimes it catches the left or right wing first & brings it down a little un-gracefully, but it's no big deal. I'd go for the stubble every time before pavement.

Use a little clear packaging tape and cover the bottom and that will eliminate the scratches plus decrease the amount of drag!

Hello,
I build a small skid about 1" wide and 4" long for my Zagi 400X. I made it out of epp, tapered the front and simply taped it to the center of the wing along the cg so it would stop skidding on the grass or dirt fields I fly in. Im sure it adds a little drag to it but I can no touch down and it lands within a foot where as it used to slide for about 5 feet. It also provides a nice place to throw the plane from. You'll still get scratches but you'll reduse the possibilty of twigs and rocks cutting into the foam as it slides along the ground

I put landing gear on my FMA Razor. It was a riot doing touch and goes on pavement. Looked kind of like a stealth bomber sitting low on the wheels. Gets really interesting doing take offs with no rudder.

Do not try to catch the wing! If you are anything like me you will damage it while trying to hold the radio and catch it at the same time. I hate foam!

What is all this rubbish about catching the zagi, you guys have no idea how dangerous this could be. Do what you like in your own space but please don't encourage people on here. 3lb of weight flying at speed can do some damage if it hits you.

This thread isn't about Zagi's - it's about Unicorns. A similar breed, but a different beast. They glide so slowly catching them is a possibilty, if of course you're careful. Mine weighs in at 1.5lb. I'm not advocating dangerous flying, but if there is little choice as it seems in lwatson's case this is a possibility.

ricktkenny,
Didn't I see on rcgroups that you have a video that you recently posted catching a Zagi? I may be wrong, but I thought that was you.

I second what Flying Pig said. I've caught my Unicorn before. My Zagi would decapitate me! Two different beasts.

I have seen people catching the zagi at about chest level and it is tricky and dangerous. However, it is not impossible. Most people do that in my field to prevent significant damage to the underside.

Use the Weeds, go level throttle off for 20 feet, 3 feet off the ground pull up Full on the eleverons hard, stall .PLOP no sweat. If you get good at this you can catch it in your TEETH. Cheers Mike Burns
