Default Corsair Advice

Gents: Thanks for the helpful info!! Particularly the photos on cooling("a picture is worth a 1000 words"). I'm using a std GWS 4-channel receiver and I was a bit concerned about positioning it around the battery in case it should work loose. My Whatt Meter shows 100W with the MPJet 25/25 motor, 9X6 prop, and the 8-cell 1100mAh pack I got from H-L. May not be as spirited as y'alls planes, but it's a starting point. And, yeah, I've not got the 3-bladed prop (yet), but at least I "painted" my APC prop black with a permanent marker. Carlton

PM22002 Radial Mount Set for AXI 22 Series Brushless Motors.

only pic I took was of the P-51 install and a finished 190.With the Corsair you just have to dremel away a little of the center of cowl so rotating can won't contact. Helps with cooling to boot.See if I can snap a pic.
Happy landings !

Thanks swampfox.[sm=thumbup.gif]

I was confused because I am stupid sometimes (most of the time actually).[X(]

The reason I was confused was because I have an AXI I am installing on the p-47. I was thinking it was the 2212/20 you referenced, but I double checked and it was the 2212/34...which is a little longer, and requires some modification.

Can anyone suggest a brushless set up for the Corsair that is easily available in the UK?

I installed the AXI 2212/34 in my P-47. I cut out the firewall, leaving about a 1/2 inch lip all around. I then made a firewall and glued it to the back side of the old one. Worked like a charm. The plane flew great with a Kokam 3s 1500 pack and an APC 9x6 eprop.

Thats pretty much what I'm doing. Of course, I am waiting for my speed control at the moment.

Here's a pic of Alfa's upgraded Corsair.

You'll know when its not far off coming into the Hobby Shops, when they start discounting the current models by $10 or $20.

Wow!!!! Pretty.

Well after only 5 flights, I have managed to burn up the speed 300 that I bought with it. Turns out that on flight 2 the gearbox took a jolt that jammed the beaing back slightly. And the following flights over burdoned the motor. Since I am new to electric, I didn't detect the extra friction on the gears. Soooooooooooooo,
I have ordered a MP Outrunner brushless and yes, a three blade prop to deck her out. Should be here next week. Now I even catch myself looking at Li-po batteries in my spare time. Watts next???

I've been flying the P47 for about a month now. I love it. Fast, predictable, easy to fly.

I took one really bad noser with it, which was a freak thing. I think I was getting a little overconfident and started hot-dogging beyond my skills. I thought it was a gonner, as the nose was buried in the ground and completely smashed. But I rebuilt the front end with balsa sheeting, and she looks and flies fine.

None of the Alfa's are beginners planes.

Their prop models with the standard Speed 300/5:1 Gearbox set up, fly at a similar speed to a low winged glow powered .40 sports model.

If you want to learn to fly by yourself, look at the "Hobbyzone" Parkflyer range at your LHS, otherwise approach a local R/C club and see if they have an instructor available who can direct you.

Good advice, Woody.

In Italy, you may want to look at some of the Icarus slowflyer models to start out with. I'm not sure that HobbyZone sells in Europe yet.

The GWS Slow Stick is another good starter model. Once you learn to fly, the same components can be used in an Alfa model.

Good luck and welcome to RC Universe!

woody/greg,
i was searching through the forums and noticed that alot of people approve of the [link=http://www.rcmodels.com/rc-ttr-4565-f.html]Thunder Tiger 40 (RTF)[/link] what are you guys thoughts? as for buying here in italy, it won't be happening. their freq here is 40MH, and i'm not going to buy something i can't use if i decide to go back home. i'm not Italian, i'm an American just living and working here (military post). $400.00 and i could be flying within the same day, hopefully? i'm new to this and been doing a lot of reading before i make my first purchase. i would like for the first to be a good one.

A .40-size trainer needs to be setup and flown by an experienced R/Cer first and then he can train you on how to fly it. I would not recommend trying it yourself without supervision.

Other than that, they fly great!

Schemo, have a look at the new Graupner/JR MX22.

It is available on 40 mhz and can be converted to 72 MHZ frequency by simply changing the crystal module in the rear of the Tx with the same module that is found in the new JR 9303.

Its a plug in/plug out set up, that does NOT have to be performd by a repair shop. Takes you about 15 seconds.

As for setting up in Mode 1,2 3 or 4, you decide that and program it into the Tx .

It is an expensive radio to start with, but it is a good answer to your frequency concerns and you will never need another radio set in your life. A lot of us started with bottom end, cheap radios and very soon upgraded to more sophisticated ones. You won't have to do that with this unit.

As for the Horizon stuff I mentioned, Scorpio in Italy are the agents for that .

See:http://www.scorpio.it/index.dhtml.

It is in Italian, but you shouldn't have any problems getting a translator over there if you can't speak the language. You can purchase direct from their website.

Schemo, As far as I know the Graupner/JR MX 22 isn't available in the USA --yet!
But it is available in Europe. It is sold as a Graupner radio.
Maybe because it can be changed to whatever frequency band the owner wants, it could endanger the US JR Distributors market, so they aren't interested in it?

Well I thought I'd add to this thread.

I'm putting my Alfa Corsair together based on the "Fly RC" setup from 10/04. I got the new Tri color version. The Jet Outrunner motor won't clear the cowl and in the review blocks were added to attach the cowl forward to get clearance BUT on the tricolor version they left the cowl on to paint and when you move it forward you get a nice white band of unpainted foam[:@]

So I had to cut away a good chunk of dummy engine to get the cowl to fit and line up properly. The entire front of the motor is exposed so cooling isn't a problem but it's not as pretty as I had hoped for. Alfa needs to paint the fuse to the firewall to allow for this.

Photos added in edit. First shows mounted motor with the mount turned around so the motor isn't protruding as much. You can see the white band of unpainted foam here. Then the front with the cowl cut. the motor's red color stands out like a sore thumb. Next I took a Sharpie marker and painted the front of the motor black. I believe this will hold up and it added no weight to affect the balance of the motor. I can always remove the marker carefully with some alcohol on a Q tip.

Another thing to inspect is the belly fuse joint from the wing saddle to the tail tip. Mine had a few small voids where the joint would open. I had cut an opening where the tailwheel would be for venting then dripped some foam safe CA held the fuse on an angle and let it run forward the length of the joint. More fuse venting at the location of the exhausts.

How are people mounting their controller power switch? Inside the compartment or cutting a notch and having it show on the side?
