Im only 15 and don't have access to a CNC maching or anything like that....I tried scissors at one corner but it flatens the foam too much. What do u guys use to cut out pieces from foam?

This is my first time ever building from plans. So I;m new. Its gonna be a KatanaS from www.3dfoamy.com

I cut out the plans with scissors then tape them to the foam in various places. I then use an exacto knife on a wood surface. NOT YOUR MOMS DINING ROOM TABLE!(experience talking). If you take your time it works real good. PATIENCE!

i used the modeling knives from wal-mart. They worked really good, but took about 2.5 hours!! I still need to use sand paper to get the edges right...

Thanks Everyone,

The best thing I have found to cut fan-fold, Depron, ect. is a heated #11 hobby blade.
Lowes, Home Depot, sell a Weller soldering Iron kit that includes a fitting that holds a #11 blade.
Makes perfect cuts every time, only cost about $13.00.

3D, You have to find a nice piece of glass to cut on. A glass door from an old entertainment center works great. Get a box of 100 blades because you must change the blade often while cutting foam. I use glass when cutting Monokote as well.

The hot knife Idea is also very good, I made one from an old solder pencil.

Glass has no give the blade meets the glass and does the job without getting misdirected. If you cut on a soft surface the blade gets misdirected. Try it, get a small piece of glass and make some cuts, you will see for yourself.
I have the luxury of having an AMA hall of fame-er in my club. Vertical ts's uncle, who has been on several AMA mag covers. He is a premiere builder and will have a more defined answer as to why. I picked it up from him 20 years ago. It's good for cutting covering material, balsa, foam just about everything.

Good luck

Try the glass for a cutting surface; it's the best!

How did you attach the blade to the soldering iron? Can you post any pics?
