with all that "equipment" do you happen to have a wind tunnel?

Hey,
We don't have a wind tunnel, but Auburn University does. They helped us do some testing on the GeoBat model.

They also have a water tunnel. The model is built with tiny tubes in it where they inject dye and it gives almost a better effect than a wind tunnel. (These are the guys who also tested a flat plate)

Here is a Discovery channel segment on it. As well as a few pics

SWEET!

so now you can test the drag differences between a proper airfoil and a flat plate.

The one thing that suprised me more than anything was my ultralight.

With wheel pants it cruises at 60 MPH (GPS verified)
With the wheel pants removed -55 MPH

I never would have guessed such a difference in speed.

I guess thats why I make my own canopies and servo covers and just try to clean things up on the foamies.

I use a soldering iron to bury the carbon fiber rods.etc

hey, makes sense with and with out wheel pans, more drag = less efficency = less speed, that simple, eh, er, kindof stalled work on plane, decided to make it single wing, got to get RC stuff on order REAL SOON!!!!!!!!!!

now you just need to get some doors for it.

Hey, how exactly do you use a soldering iron to "bury" the rods?

Hey Guys,

.... Back to flat foam... I put together my second build of the Thomas Nelson's SU-27, with fan fold foam. However this time, I modified the design and put in some ailerons to increase the roll rate. I really liked how my first one flew, but using elevon mixing it just didn't roll fast enough.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. My first couple attempts at flying it were not that great... I biffed it into the snow two or three times. I had the mixing too high, and the ailerons were just too sensitive. Dropped it back to 25% (yeah, I started at 100%, lol), and it's much more managable.

Here is some video from todays flight! Enjoy!

Hey Guys,
Here is a Video My son shot for me yesterday.....(my crappy editing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxZ1v_PBtAQ

This is My Flipper racing a Nitro truck on my new Monster truck track out in the back 40.

Man we had a ball........ The plane was mucho faster than the truck.... I actually had trouble flying that slow!

Some foamie people hate landing gear....... I think this video shows how much fun having a landing gear can be.

Jay - Thanks for the comments. I think the flanker is a pretty cool build, and would suggest it to anyone looking for a FFF project. It's a lot easier to build than it looks. I would however suggest putting ailerons on it, as I have in my second build.

Marko - That's a hilarious video! Amesome job! Some pretty amazing control you have there with that Flipper. Thanks for sharing with us!

it needs to have bigger wheels and be taller to look more like a car, but other than that, it's pretty sweet!

I tried a new way to make a faux cockpit on flat foam. It came out great, so I thought I would share:

J.M.
here is how I bury the carbon fiber rods....
I turned the tip down on this soldering iron in my lathe to about 1/8 dia.

then I bent it at the angle shown in the pic.

I lay a 36" metal scale where I want the groove..... then use the iron to burn the groove.
It takes practice and is not easy at first. I then hot glue the carbon fiber rod in and then tape over that.

Where did everybody go?????? I have been working on a few of my planes, getting them ready for calm and warmer weather. Fixing to start a Geobat in the near future. Have no servos for it, so I need to crash something....LOL Anyway since no one has posted I will go off topic with a picture I took yesterday of my Mustangs. The silver one is a 2006 for my son and the black is a limited edition 2008, only 2500 being made. The only thing I heven't figured out yet is where to haul my planes???

Duplex Delta had its maiden today. All went well. It was a stable flyer. The weather was perfect. Clear blue skies and light winds across a BIG open field which it had all to itself. It climbed out smartly upon lauching. The Duplex looks strange, in a good way, in the air. Its unique shape at times makes keeping orientaion a challenge. Comming square on or away, its thin profile (edges of white 6mm Depron and tapered fuse are all that are presented) cleans up quickly resulting in a almost invisable plane. Pior to going out to fly, one last marking was added at the acft's nose. It helped a lot. The acft is not a speed deamon. There is a good bit of wing hanging out to drag/slow things down. Winds today were a max of 5mph and that was perfect for the Duplex. It would do well in a large indoor venue. Flying it kept reminding me of a mianature ultra light and its being a
cartoon come to life. Someone who was very artistic could follow through on the cartoon theme to make the Duplex look very interesting. It seems at 1st try the cg was dialed. Flew with both 1300mAh and 1000mAh lipo's. Five minutes flying on the 1300mAh's took out 498mAh.

Pecanpatch, yes, at times its orientation gets confusing. However, the bright markings are a life saver. I have seen a video of someone flying an all white one. It would have been a gonner if I were flying.

80" Geobat?! Pictures and/or video?
