RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Hi Everyone, this is off your topic !
I would like to know if anyone knows of any plans for the big flat foam Eagle.
If anyone does I sure would appreciate a link to them .
Thanks To All

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Iam sure this question has been asked, but seeing as there tons of pages, Imust have missed it.
Can anybody give me a ball park price to build a flat foam airplane. i'm thinking along the lines of a nasty or even the easier three channel plane. Doesn't have to be the biggest motor/fastest plane around, just a solid flier?
Are we talking $100, $150, or more? Ihave noticed that the motor alone is around the $50 range.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Well for me building a simple solid 4 channel foamy, flying spektrum 2.4 it would cost me:
$50 receiver
+/- $50 motor
+/- $50 ESC
+/- $50 servos
+/- $15 battery
+/- $10 foam
+/- $15 Odds and Ends/ control horns/ clevises/ pushrods/ carbon fiber stiffiner etc. etc...
I havent built one in a while but those are probably some rough estimates of what it might cost

Ya, I would probably alot that amount of money if you were going to build one, you may not use all of it but then again you just might.
Now if your the kind of person that likes to save money anywhere you can you could probably go online to hobby king or similar and get some $4 dollar servos, $5 dollar battery $10 dollar motor and $10 dollar esc and build a really cheap and quick plane but there is no garuntee it will hold up for very long or be very precise, however I have bought really cheap motors from them that work great. So It all depends on where you get your electronics.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Not yet but when the PZ P51 fuselage finally gives out I'll be converting the guts into an F22 pusher(need to investigate AR6400 elevon mixing), ~12-14" span, 3mm depron. I noticed that with the stock setup and 138 batt the ESC hits LVC at WOT, evidenced by the motor surging, I started running 2 138 packs in parallel for the extra C's and it's an entirely different airplane. I'm also toying with the idea of a micro SlowStick based on the PZ guts or maybe just buying another AR6400 to play with.

I haven't tried the Ember, I got into a Plantraco setup and then on the the PZ P51. I'd rather scratch build something like the Ember than buy one though(I have a serious building problem, need a 12 step program).

I Personal enjoy the blue fan fold foam I purchased @ Lowes It has printed on the board DOW protection board III.
In one purchase you get 1 long sheet folded 25 times 23.5"x 49"x 4mm thick for about 38 bucks. not all Lowes stock it.
You can bend the stuff and its easy to repair with hot glue or epoxy.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
nice birds, i tried asking once before what you guys were using but all i got was a cranky response so i gave up on finding out. but now that i know im going to take a trip to lowes this week when i get paid and hopefully pick some up. that blue foam would be nice for me too with the larger size of the sheets. i have the problem with foam board that after i cut a few pieces i get to a point where i have scrap pieces that i cannot use because there not large enough. ill have to give that stuff a try though. how is it in the weight department? is it heavy or light? from what i can see in the pics it looks to be rather dense.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
I like it better than the foam board I think you are refering too. (paper on both sides?)
It is much lighter than that stuff. It will deform or crush a lil on impact where Depron breaks like a potatoe chip.
Works well with gorilla glue or epoxy. Foam safe super glues are just to expensive and have terible shelf lifes too, I wont use them.

I have to special order the FFF at Lowe's. Go to the contractors counter and ask for this, it runs ~$65 with handling fees and 6% sales tax: 1/4" x 48" x 50' Insulated Sheathing, Item #: 127129 | Model #: 669153
