Airfoil designs. What do they do?
Does anyone out there have experience with different styles of airfoils? What kinds are there and what purpose do they serve (besides the obvious)?
In other words, by changing the characteristics of a foil, what effect does it have on the flight characteristics? I know that more weight means you need a bigger wing, but I'm just concentrating on the shape of the foil.
Help if you can and I'll leave a bag of doughnuts in my next post. [:'(]
Thanks!

Well......... It depends on what you want to do....
A flat bottom or undercambered foil will give you good lift.
A symetrical wing will give you good tracking in various attitudes of flight.
a thin foil is good for speed.
a fat foil is good for slow flight at extreme angles of attack.
The lower your weight and the higher your power... the less important your airfoil choice makes.

Airfoils are not really important in SPORT PLANES.
When modelers can make, lawnmowers, Witches on a broom, Snoopy doghouses with Snoopy on it and just about anything else fly very good, airfoils are not important. Certaintly nothing to get worried about.
A hand drawn " Clark Y " from a website is good enough. FOR SPORT FLYING.
The old saying, Cubic inchs beat all else, holds true.
I am sure someone has made a model of a Red Brick and flown it.

Sweet. Very informative. I built a simple foamy from 2" foam and also built the hot wire cutter. Using balsa wood I cut out some templates with scissors and (very important) sanded the edges. The plane flies great, except I cut the aileron a little small so it turns like a tank but, ya know, an 8x4 sheet of foam is $10 so fuhget about it, uh? Thanks a lot fellas (or ladies, ah em).
