"Flatout Zero" speed brakes?
 

Hello all! My local church gym proved to be tooo small to fly my new "Flatout Zero" (stock setup)

I am WONDERING if it would work better if I fabricated some 'speed brakes', like such:

Does anyone think this would work??

I can only address this from the viewpoint of speed brakes on a full scale Mooney. Basically the speed brake pops up just in front of the main spare and it spoils the airflow over the wing, hence creating less lift. To compensate for holding altitude, the pilot raises the nose of the aircraft and effectively enters a slow flight attitude. In reality, no one uses speed brakes to go slow. Let's say your cruising a long at 5,000 AGL and need to get down to 2,000 AGL because that is the instruction just received from Air Traffic Control. The manuever is commonly referred to as "Slam Dunk". The speed brakes, because you loose lift, allow you to descend rapidly without slowing down and when you reach the desired altitude, you lower the speed brakes and continue at cruise speed at the new assigned altitude.

To answer your question, NO, I don't think that speed brakes will give you the result you are looking for, instead, try a biplane which traditionally is a slower ship and highly manueverable.

get a brushless and just harrier it around, i do that with my planes, except i fly in my house

I understand the idea of loss of lift. One would have to increase power to allow for sustained altitude.
But here is the video of the Enticement F3P ARF I look last weekend, and was floored at how slow it moved with the 'speed brakes' added.

Here's the pics! I built some CF rod landing gear and copied the Elfite speed brakes. So far so good - Thursday will be the test flight.

What you have there is one of the most exciting fly's there is... take off the brakes and give it some power.
I have the same zero with a brushless himax.....I LOVE THIS PLANE!

If your looking for an extra slow indoor aircraft, do a search for "Bill Lowes Ghost" on youtube or he might be on RCU too. These things fly at walking speed and weigh 4 or 5 ounces fully equipped. Im not affiliated with Mr Lowe, but I've been eyeballing the "ghost bipe" for awhile.:D Let us know how those speed brakes work out.
