i have been a member of rcu for a while and have seen it go through many changes. as of the past few months i am noticing more and more use of foul language and bitter arguing in the forums. people are being so nasty and crass as of late. i have no idea of how old most people are so i won't generalize about ages and maturity levels but it seems many people here are just using the forums as arguing boards. i used to come here for help with problems i may have had and to see new products and for some help on making a new purchase, now it seems like more of an online jerry springer show. i think something needs to be done about censoring these users and blocking not only screennames but ip addresses as well so they cannot just create a new account. some of you may think of this as blatant censorship or even go so far as to scream communism but these forums have gone down hill really quickly. i have been in the car forums mostly in the past year or so as my hobby focuses have changed and this may not pertain to other forums here but the car section has deteriorated to a point where i don't have any desire to view any thread that i did not create myself.
anyone else noticing this or am i getting cranky in my old age?(27)

A majority of them are children. I mean literally children. It's real easy to tell who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't simply by how they write and spell. Mis-spelled words is common. You'll find that most adults who mispell a word was because he missed the key. Kids can't spell because they don't know how to in the first place and spell it like the say it.
Real obvious. Don't let a person with a high post count lead you to believe he's an expert. You can tell just by the way he argues whether or not your dealing with a kid or not. They just won't listen so who cares.
Another reason is the moderators are not nipping this in the back end when they should stop it. We have countless threads which a guy asks a simple question like what prop on what engine and 4 replies later there is whining over servos or something totally unrelated.

Allison, I agree with you; but its really not bad here on RCU, compared to some of the other forums. And I heartily agree that the car forums are BY FAR the worst here. Its like Cyclic said; kids who have more testosterone than brains or manners. I have no idea why the somewhat inflexible moderation seen on the rest of this board is not applied to the car forums.
Why is that, Marc????
I have quit going to the car forums altogether... the constant bickering is one factor, but the main reason is I give myself a headache trying to decipher the 'chat-speak' those kids use.
Let me tell you a little story about censorship and communism. Its a funny story. When the "new" RCU was unveiled, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, bemoaning the good old days, etc. I was one who was NOT happy to see the change, and said so. I'm still not overwhelmed with the "new" format, but it isn't the big PITA I was afraid it was going to be. But on with our story...
There were some who were very vocal, and just couldn't let it go after saying their piece. They kept on and on, verbally attacking RCU management, then crying about censorship when some posts were edited and/or deleted. Waving the First Amendment in everyone's face (not getting the point that the First Amendment does not apply to this situation- and they probably STILL don't get it
) the more radical of these folks formed their own forum, loudly proclaiming it was a free-speech environment, as opposed to "communist" RCU, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
Just the other day, I saw a revival of "let's bash RCU" over there. Now, I really don't care what they do, and have no reason to defend RCU, but the guy who made the post is a newcomer to the hobby, and while I've seen him here he really hasn't been around long enough to have a grip on what's going on. Annoyed, I made a post to the effect of "Just let it go!", then proceeded to 'splain to him why his post here might not have been answered as quickly as he might have hoped for; one possible reason being that he was considered a troll.
Well, let me tell you, that thread disappeared within the hour. Amused, I started a new thread, asking about this "censorship", and wasn't that forum started on the foundation of free speech, no censorship, etc., etc??? That one got nuked in jig time as well.
What a hoot. Here we see these sanctimonious flag-wavers doing the EXACT same thing they were crying about happening here. Every time I think I've seen the limits of human absurdity, someone proves me wrong...

Thanks for the comments guys. Since day one we have had to deal with trolls, arguments and everything else. We have 50 moderators here and we rotate through them every few months when some burnout or just do not have extra time to lend a hand. We try to run as tight a ship as possible and granted I think there is a tad too much extra leniency given in the car forums and I think that should be tightened up a bit.
As far as those who went off to start their own first amendment sites and censor at will now...there was a word to describe them and it starts with "H".
Last...the number one weapon we have against off topic posts, argumentative posts, trolls, etc is the members. There is a report post to moderator link and that is always the fastest way for us to find trouble and deal with it. RCU gets 4000 posts per day and that is not possible for the mods to read them all and decipher every one. However we have 10's of thousands of members every day reading these posts so if you find something offensive, argumentative or against any of our rules just report it. We deal with it without revealing who reported it and it makes the mods job of keeping things informative and friendly here MUCH easier.

Threre are the whiners, true.
There are the ecomplainers as well.
Ther are the legitimates who have a beef, and want to 'duke it out' with the rest, or someone in particular...
There are those who don't like the right / most common answer, and are looking for the schmuzz who'll blindly agree..
There's the ones who feel strongly enough to write their opinion..
There are one who can't put a thought toghether, then type it out...
There are ones who type phonetically...
there are those who are dyslexic, and have never been good with spelling (me..) let alone have 'typists' fingures..
Some jsut want to be heard.. and will say anything
But I'll agree that ther are a few who poke & provoke..

Young people are fast learners, And a lot of use older one's show them the way, It's getting where a person hates to start a thread or post on a thread for what may happen. Screen name always do not stop people from knowing who you are, it just give you a sense of the other guy is dumber than you!

DITTO!
It took me a while to understand that many here are children that have a lot of extra time and nowhere to go. Not all young people are rude, but many feel the need to establish their place in life with BOLD, OVERBEARING, DEFINATIVE statements. (I know-- back in the "stone age" I was the same way
) Another thing I have learned about the site is that you can post that the sun will come up tomorrow, and you can bet your bottom dollar that somebody will disagree with you.

Most people that cause problems are old anough to vote but don't, but do all the complaining. You think you will not meet one of these people in person ,WRONG I did and they are the same in person as they are on the NET!!!!!! and cause the same problems.

Some people think I might be a Mod. but I am not the Jackass they think I am. Just trying to have fun like the rest of you . Some people think they rule RC but they have a lot to learn. There is no control on what we do , but we make sure we try to do thing right. Sh23t Happens that we have no control of. Yes we have better Equip. but things can happen we have no control of.

HI, I to am fed up BUT!!! my problem is more with "some" mods that do NOT do there JOB fairly, it is a two way street.
ATTEN RC admin
I Have always tryed to stick with/post facts and DO NOT personaly insult others but I will NOT be insulted either with out returning the favor. I understand I am just one person (no big loss) but I feel mods need to be more carefull and look at both sides of every story, because there are always two sides to every story.

MR i8tweety, I am wondering if you are being a hippocrit, is it OK for popa to insult me??? and other people on this thread because I happen to have and like this kit???, because I AM insulted.
I DID NOT OUTRIGHT CALL ANYONE A "crybaby" or "stupid" but yet you feel its ok for some "SPECIAL" people here to insult me and what others and I own.
[quote]ORIGINAL: popa71
That kit is a POS, you stand alone. So you can keep enjoying that piece of crap if you want. The rest of us were smart enough to dump that garbage!!!!!!! If you do a search you will see thats the only thing I said was worth a damn on that heap!!!!!!!!!! What good is an engine without a working truck!!!!!! POSPOSPOS
MR i8tweety,... I do believe your are a hippo... lol
I feel sorry for anyone that owns this kit and logs on here only to be insulted for owning this kit by someone that does NOT know ANYTHING about it EXCEPT!!! to CONTINUALY call it a POS.
Thanx MR i8tweety... do you own a t maxx by chance??? because that would explain alot.
EVERY TIME popa has posted in a DD thread he has insulted me and othhers that OWN this kit and do NOT have ALL the problems (what ever they are) that he had.
MR i8tweety, could I direct your attention to just this ONE thread..., in particular, the last post
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_12...tm.htm#1497018
ARE people with this kit NOT WELCOME at RCU???, maybe you should put a "notice" up saying...
ATTEN Dirt Demon OWNERS... your truck is a POS, do not post here!, your truck is ugly and garbage and a heap and we like to laugh at you.
NOW, to repete what I said before... but nicer, because I would not want to offend some of the great people here.
popa, I do not believe you know what you are doing, considering it only takes 6 tanks of fuel to break in an engine and you rebuilt the diffs 8 times... EIGHT TIMES, did you not think shiming the diffs lol, this is what other people do with MOST kits and it is NO diffrent on the DD, and IT WORKS!!! lol.
popa, I do not believe you know what you are talking about, you say the diffs can't hold the power of a .15 engine let alone a .26 and yet there are people running twin engined DD's and TQ's on these kits.
popa, I do not believe you know anything, you say there are no aftermarket parts and yet you can buy aftermarket gears, alumium a arms, diff parts and lots more.
I truly feel sorry for the people that come to this RCU site only to be filled full of BS by someone that is ignorant about this kit.
To DD and TQ owners
EXTREME RC PARTS has after market parts and GREAT! info for these kits
http://www.extremercparts.com/
HOME BOUND RC also has TWIN ENGINED KITS for both the DD and TQ
http://www.home-bound1.com/
Now again popa, I feel since you continualy want to talk about POS kits, you should be INCLUDING the T maxx, this kit has FAR many more problems with durability and parts breakage with DIFFS and TRANNYS, AND SHOCKS, AND AXLES, AND SO ON!!!...
I also know that many other kits on the market have had ther share of diff and/or trany or other problems like... HPI, OFNA, PRP,and don't forget TRAXXAS lol.
FACT, I have many/most 8scale nitro kits on the market 30+, the DD is one of them, I favor no manufacturer, I do have favorites and the DD is one of them regardless of any issues, popa you have NEVER HELPED ANYONE on this RCU forum (do a search) that has posted questions about the DD/TQ, all you have ever posted is INSUTS which is (NOT HELP) to the people that have owned this kit.
MR i8tweety, I will copy my posts for now on.

What are the necessary precautions for a tranny tearing up three times within five tanks of fuel!!!!!! What are the necessary precautions against diffs that cant handle the power of the engine or weight of the truck with stock wheels. If you are talking about threadlocking screws, I did after the first tank where 4 screws fell out. But too me the screws were not a problem. The tranny and diffs are a flawed design. If an engine is not so great in a kit or a radio or something of that nature I dont consider it a bad kit. All ready to Run vehicle have something on them that will need upgrading. But when the design of the truck is flawed to where you cant it run it on flat pavement without breaking it.Its a bad kit. The conditions this truck was subjected too were of the lightest sort. Straight forward running on asphalt with no curbs bumps or jumps. Just trying to break it in properly. The Diffs and the tranny had to be rebuilt 8 times before the engine was completely broken in. That in my book is a POS

I completely agree with ALLISONMO2. It's actually bad enough that I only visit RCU 2 or 3 times a week, if that. I used to visit 2 or 3 times a day but now I can't come here without running into offensive material. If anyone knows of better a RC forum please PM me.
AJF-2 No offense but I have to say this just for kicks & giggles. The sun won't rise for some parts of the world tomorrow. Think Alaska. My timing may be off, it may not set in Alaska tomorrow but somewhere in the world it won't rise. Also, Earth comes around to the sun. The sun doesn't come up for us.
Even simple arguments have 2 sides. The one that blows my mind is the one where a mod tried to claim that the explicative that uses God in it isn't a curse or using the Lord's name in vain. I wonder how fast the clouds would drop from under his feet if he said it in front of Saint Peter. If ANY combination of words should be edited it should be those.
I think for the sake of making RCU tolerable again the editor should be set up to allow only words that can be said in school. P*ss, c*ck, b**ch, d*mn, h*ll, d*ck, a** and probably some others that I didn't try will all make it through the editor not to mention misspelled curse words. These are all words that we don't need in order to talk about R/Cs & they're words I don't want to read when I'm looking for info. I can deal with arguing. I can even live with some flaming but I don't like watching (mainly the same) people proving their ignorance day after day.
As of right now, I won't recommend RCU to anyone & I took RCU's link out of the tag on the bottom of my posts on other forums.

Just to be argumentative....
Suppose the admins don't like your icon/avitar. Suppose, for instance, your icon is a large-breasted female, with come-hither eyes. Hm? Suppose the admins chose to censor that icon on the grounds that it is indecent and controversial, and blank it out or remove it, or ban you from making posts? How, then, would you feel about their censorship?
I have seldom seen any good come from argumentative posts, but then, I stop reading them when the content becomes too argumentative for my tastes. I am reminded of a guest comic on a popular morning radio show, who chose to criticize smoking bans, in bars. He made an oblique attack, saying that he doesn't care for "Bed, Bath & Beyond." He doesn't like what goes ON in "Bed, Bath & Beyond." So, he doesn't GO to "Bed, Bath & Beyond." The radio host said "Well, I like to SMOKE at 'Bed, Bath & Beyond'!" The guest comic said "You know, I'm okay with that - because I don't GO to "Bed, Bath & Beyond!"
So, if I don't like the smoke in the thread, I just don't go there!
Best wishes,
Dave Olson

Best wishes,
Dave Olson

This is a trend thats not going away anytime soon for sure. You can say anything you want on the internet, and people seem to think that because they can access it they have control and power over it. It's nice to remind people about the guys who spend countless hours on the backend slaving to make the site what it is.
I've been a moderator and a (small) programmer for over 3 years at a desktop customization web site, so I've seen the worst of 13 year olds with keyboards. At other forums for other things you ask a simple question and you get smart replies reflecting the posting individual's ego.
I'm very glad people actually answer the questions asked here.. no matter how simple they are. More over I'm greatful that it's free because college is a money pit!

It isn't easy being a Moderator in here. We have a lot of decisions to make on postings, some are on the edge in one way or another. Yes, the worst bunch seem to be the truck, buggie and car people but you'd be surprised at the other places that really have to be watched that more (and I use this term loosely) adults frequent. I've found that is usually easy to pick out the teens from the over 21 crowd, their signature can give them away. They seem to have to advertise every piece of R/C equipment that they've ever owned.
Like what was said above, if you see a person or posting that is in any way offensive, report it to your Moderator. We are like most of you, we have jobs, families and other responsibilities so we are not on here 24/7/365.
Scar, (no relation to me but I do have a Bro named Dave) I know what you are talking about, I listen to the Bob and Tom Show too. I missed Kristy Lee, she was in town last night!

Me being a car mod - I agree that the worse of the trash talk meaning the cussing and bashing is in the car forums. It is hard to keep up with.
Today, I came in and did some of my usual searches hoping to find something related to what I was looking for to help me with a project. Instead the 1st 3 or 4 posts had a bunch of cussing and members bashing other members.
I enjoy and participate in the forums a lot. I just wish everyone would just get a long and be nice. That would make our jobs as mods easier. But since that is not going to be the case, I will make a suggestion. When you the user see a post with cussing or members bashing other members. Click the little link in the bottom right corner of the post that says report. It sends the mods and admins an alert to go check it out.
Thanks.
