Pop Ups

[:@] Been gettin' a lot of pop-ups with I log onto RCU. Not happening with other web sites - anyone else having this problem?

RE: Pop Ups

Nothing here.

You probably have some spyware or adware on your puter.
I use the following free programs to keep that stuff in check:
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
Spywareblaster
And I also quit using internet explorer, Mozilla is a free browser with an excellent built in pop up blocker.

this post needs to go to the appropriate section.

Your popups are on your local pc becuase of spyware. Get Spy Sweeper or Ad-Aware and scan your system

RE: Pop Ups

Yes, do a sweep and kill anything especially from "Gator" or "Gain" they are two of the most notorious butt holes in the ADWARE business.

it's true, that marketeers (internet marketeers) are becomming incresingly annoying, so much so, that they are passing 'lawers' as the most devious, manipulative, and irratting group of people we deal with!!

RE: Pop Ups

With reservations and extensive testing, I am disappointed to announce this web site has an (unknown) ad contaminated with the CWS Trojan virus. Don't believe me? Read all about it here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/c...tml#cwshredder download the shredder software and execute it. After your system is clean run this website and surf around a bit. Close your browser and run the shredder again. Guess what, it's Back!

In defense of RCU staff, CWS is very new and changing daily if not hourly. ad-aware just released their fix this morning.

Since I doubt anybody believes me. Feel free to delete this post. And please give me a way to delete my user name from this testament to commercialization.

Sorry, your software is misreporting results. Our ads are jpg or gif format. We upload them here ourselves. Image formats do not harbor trojans or spyware. The ad calls are simple javascript that we have been using for 3 years.

Rather then do your incomplete test do this. Get a fresh computer or drive with a clean OS on it that has never been on the internet. Come to RCUniverse.com ONLY and then surf around for a few hours or days. Do not leave RCU at all. Then run your program. No trojans will be found.

RE: Pop Ups

Yep, just Jpeg's. Sure, that explains all the active-x controls.

mvigod 07-12-2004 10:13 PM

RE: Pop Ups

We don't run active x stuff on RCU except for the toolbar installer which uses that component. It will ask you before the toolbar installs whether ok or not to install.

Our ads are simple straightforward php scripts that serve jpg/gif ads. It is widely available, used across the net and open source software. The rest of our site is straight cold fusion and asp. Where are you seeing active x on RCU?

RE: Pop Ups

Set active x to prompt in ie and go to any rcuniverse page.

I just did and didn't have a problem. No prompt arrived......

RE: Pop Ups

How do you set Active X prompts in IE? Let's all try it and report back.

ChuckAuger 07-15-2004 05:36 PM

RE: Pop Ups

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Then click "Prompt" in all the Active X circles.

I just turned them all on, went thru a few pages, and never got a prompt. Or a Pop Up. But I run Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware, ZoneAlarm, etc.

Woketman 07-15-2004 05:46 PM

RE: Pop Ups

I too run Spybot AdAware and ZoneAlarm (and I run the first two several times a day and keep them updated) and I am getting a prompt every time I reload an R/C Universe page! Every time.

RE: Pop Ups

Sounds like AstroPuppy might have some hijacker spyware on his system.
This crap has been propagating like crazy, and programs like spybot and ad-aware
just aren't keeping up. (Though they do an awesome job trying! Not slamming them at all)

Programs like "hijack this" and "pest patrol" will give a clearer picture of what's happening
on your system, but you have to be extremely careful with both of those... as you can easily
hose up the works unintentionally if you delete things you aren't sure of.

Sorry Astro, but I have to agree with the others here... I've set to "prompt"
on all the activeX stuff, and didn't see the issues you were speaking of.
It might be time to do some deep system cleaning, or perhaps time for a fresh format and reinstall.

Edit... same goes for woket... didn't see your post until I'd posted already :)

Here's a bone... [link=http://www.pestscan.com/]Pest Patrol's Free Scan Site[/link]
PP isn't free... it's a $40 product. The scan will give you a decent idea of how it works, and how
bad off your system is, however. Here's a link to [link=http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe]Hijack This[/link], too. Hope one of them helps.
Please, please... be careful with either program. They are meant for the more computer-savvy types.

By the way, the pest patrol site DOES use a LOT of active X... so expect some prompts on that page :-)

Sorry, no spyware here. Perhaps this will help. The generated source from this page. See all the script commands? Try turning on prompt for script too!

I did.

RE: Pop Ups

Here's some of my settings.

Download signed ActiveX controls - prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls - Disabled
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked safe - Disabled
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins - prompt
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting - Enable

Microsoft VM / Java permissions - Disable Java - This could be it, Mocrosoft VM is no longer supported, I now run Sun VM

Display mixed content - Prompt

Launching programs and files in Iframes - prompt

Navigate sub-frames across different domains - disable

Scripting for Java applets - Enable

Just to be clear, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with rcuniverse. I'm just saying theres a lot more going on here then simple jpeg advertising. Using asp in todays day and age makes a website an instant target for hackers. It's not my site, my mouth is shut.

RE: Pop Ups

Ahh... javascript-- not activeX :)
Different ballpark... and yes, there's plenty of that here... and at a lot of sites on the 'net.

mvigod 07-19-2004 02:56 PM

RE: Pop Ups

this is all simple javascript. you can shut off active x for using rcu. we don't use it except for the toolbar installation process.

Javascript is quite benign
