Moderator help on posting pictures

Can any of the moderators help me with being able to post pix again or refer me to a tech. I used to be able to post pix to this page but of late I keep getting the 'FILE TOO LARGE' error thingy. It doesn't matter what the file size is at all and I still get this 'error'. Nothing has changed as far as my computer equipment as this is the same one that I have had for a couple years now and have posted to this list several times. It's a hassle to keep asking other jet list guys if I can email them the pix and have them post them for me.( they can post the same file that I get the error message with!)
Any ideas?

TIA
Kim

Hi Kim,

I'd be happy to post pics for you again if necessary, while you wait to figure this problem out.

Since others don't seem to have this problem, it might help Marc et al debug the issue if you specify exactly what OS and browser versions you are using. (Reproducing the problem is frequently the hardest part of debugging it)

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

I think this typically happens from certain browsers like netscape 7.1 (upgrade to newer if you have this version) or if the filesize is way too big (over 3MB) or if your file is big but your network slow causing upload timeout issues.

Best thing to do is try to grab a photo from a post and then upload that as a test image to our forum. since it is already sized we know the file is good and will load quick. if that works then you know it is your file. If it fails it is your browser in which case test an alternate browser to be sure. If that works then we just narrow down why your browser is choking.

I have had trouble posting jpg's to the forum in the past. I always get the "There was an error saving the file to disk. " I am using Netscape 7.01. I will try IE to see if it is actually the browser.

This is Internet Explorer 6.0.2. and I received a note that the upload was successful so it must be the browser.

yup..older netscapes seem to choke on it. upgrade to latest netscape, firefox or IE and no problems guaranteed

when you were done did you put text in the post and hit ok too? just uploading the file won't complete the process.

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

Tried it again. same as before. no post appears when an image is attached.
As I said before, nothing has changed on this end at all since I used to be able to post with pix. Not the OS, not the browser, not the ISP, NUTTIN'!
I can post text all that I want too.
When I post with even a teeny tiny image none of the post appears at all but the confirmation message says that it went through.
Perhaps there is a paramater that is not set correctly at RCU. (sorta' like the paramater that I can set in my email program that allows me to limit the size of emails that I will accept)

???????????????????????????????????????????

Perhaps I've been banned from image uploads. My been bad?

I just uploaded Netscape 7.2 (I dislike using IE) so this is my final test. Looks liked it worked. Thanks for the info on the older Netscapes.

Ditto - I use IE only on my company's system .. my personal systems use Firefox - you might wanna give it a try if you ever get tired of Netscape. You can get it at e.g. http://google-download.com.com/Mozil...-10335582.html

Hi Gordon,

I downloaded Firefox and 'no soap'. (using it now)

When I send a very small pic it says 'FILE UPLOADED SUCCESSFULY" but no post apears. (no, not even the text)
Same as IE browser.

Yowser ... maybe you're right, and you got "picture posting privileges" revoked because of being bad ! [X(]:D

Forgive me for asking ... but it's best not to assume anything ... you ARE pressing the FINAL ok button as well, right ? When you upload a pic there is a pop-up window that says you need to wait while the pic uploads, then it says "Uploaded successfully" and you click the OK button on that pop-up window and then you click the ok button on the main window that you are posting from. You are doing BOTH of those OK's, right ? Don't mean to insult your intelligence with this question, but sometimes we all miss a step somewhere or other.

You say you used to be able to post pics ok - any idea how long ago ? (e.g. for starters was it with the old RCU that did not have the built-in image resizer, etc.)

This may take Marc et al a while to track down - so if you need any pics posted in the meantime, I would be happy to help. You possibly still have my email addr from the last time we did this - in case you don't, I'll PM it to you again. It's absolutely no bother at all for me to post the pics, so don't be shy about asking. Your projects are intersting enough that we wanna see thos epics !!

Suprise! That one went through.
Now, let's check the 640x405 image (759k)and see if I get the 'FILE TOO LARGE' message.

No soap again on the 759kb image.

I'll try again and sized to about a 400 kb size.

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

Alright !!! !e have a picture !

Now we just need to get around the uploading issues you had. Like Marc suggested, you could be victim to a slow upload causing a timeout. Two main ways to fix that are:

1) Get a faster connection - not always practical, or cost effective.
2) Reduce the size before submitting the pic, so that you only need to upload the reduced pic, and consequently have less chance oif a timeout.

For the latter - do you have Photoshop, or Microsoft Photo Editor, or anything else like that, that would allow you to shrink the pic ? (Depending on the tool, you may be looking for an option called "resize", or "crop", etc., etc.)

If you don't have any kind of photo editor available just now you can probably find a freeware / shareware one - I've not tried any of these, but a quick google search for "freeware photo editor image resize" foudn a bunch of matches including http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gm...phicedit.shtml

Good luck,

Gordon

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

keep all your pics under 100k if on dialup. we do resize for the broadband guys so they don't have to and allow up to 3MB uploads which we do the sizing. If you are on dialup and trying to push more then 100k file up you are in for it. resave as jpg format 800x600 pixels or less then try. should work 100%

Gordon Mc 02-07-2005 01:30 PM

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

LOL - we're all posting so fast here that we're stomping all over each other - you already tried the resize thing before I even hit "ok" on my post, and yours made mine obsolete already.

Oh well ... I'll leave you to experiment a bit while I go do that darned "day job" thing.

I have photoshop. I have resized the L-39 pic to 375kb.

File is too large!

mvigod 02-07-2005 01:34 PM

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

get it under 100k and try. save as jpg format using save for web feature. at 375kb your not outputting it using save for web or your dimensions are too big.

you are on dial up right?

JetMax 02-07-2005 01:37 PM

RE: Moderator help on posting pictures

Yes, dialup. No cable out where I'm at.
