Hi, I have a Futaba T8J transmitter which exhibits the following behavior: if the the C Switch is on the furthest away position (up?) the transmitter would not turn on at all on the power switch. If the transmitter was ON (C on a different position) and I flip C on the furthest away position, the transmitter turns off.

Is it a setting that I might have set by mistake? or is the transmitter defective?

That does not sound right and I cannot think of any setting that would cause/do that. I suggest you send it to your nearest service center with a detailed description of what it is doing.;
