Futaba servos and LIFe Battery

Hi
Is it safe to run Futaba digital servos from an unregulated 2s LiFe Pack or am I risking damaging the servos ? I have an installation in a jet with not alot of room and was hoping I could do without a voltage regulator.

Mike

RE: Futaba servos and LIFe Battery

If the digital servos you are using are rated at 6V you will be fine with the 2s LiFe pack. But if they are rated at 4.8V, then you will need to use a regulator.

Forgive me for piggy backing on this question, but are you saying a Futaba servo rated at 4.8 and 6.0 volts will work with an unregulated Life battery? In other words, some of your servos are only rated for 4.8 and they are the type that require a regulated LIFE battery.

I am not undertanding your question, I'm sorry.

The second line of my answer states:

But if they are rated at 4.8V, then you will need to use a regulator.
If this is not what you are referring to, please explain futher.

RE: Futaba servos and LIFe Battery

Sorry Krysta, your english is confusing.<div></div><div>A servo can be rated at 4.8V and 6.0V. The way you have worded your reply suggests that if a 4.8V rating features in the spec of the servo then it is not suitable for LiFe batteries without a regulator. Futaba has servo's rated at 4.8V and 6.0V so be implication of your wording, these servo's are not suitable for LiFe battery packs.</div><div>Furthermore are you suggesting that if the servo is rated only at 6.0V it is suitable for LiFe?
</div><div></div><div>My Understanding, is that if the servo is ONLY rated at 4.8V it is NOT SUITABLE FOR LiFe.</div><div></div><div>If it is rated at 4.8V AND 6.0V or is listed as HV, it IS SUITABLE for LiFe.</div><div></div><div>Would this understanding be correct?

Furthermore, to expand on my interpretation of what you are saying:

1) Why would a servo rated at 4.8V and 6.0V not be suitable for LiFe when 6.0V NiMH, or NiCAD batteries are 7.2V max and these batteries are at 0 capacity when at 6.0V?

2) Why would a servo rated at only 6.0V not be suitable for a 4.8V NiMH, NiCAD or NiZn (Nickel Zinc) battery pack?</div>

Hi Krysta, To clarify my question; is the following consistent with your original reply? If the Futaba servo is only rated for 4.8 volts, it cannot use a LIFE battery without a regulator. If the Futaba servo is rated for both 4.8 and 6 volts than a regulator is not required for a LIFE battery. Thank you!

ORIGINAL: Slow and Steady
If the Futaba servo is only rated for 4.8 volts, it cannot use a LIFE battery without a regulator. If the Futaba servo is rated for both 4.8 and 6 volts than a regulator is not required for a LIFE battery.
That is the way I understand it.

If the servo specs ONLY show data for 4.8V, then a LiFe battery must be regulated. The servo cannot handle 6V.

However, if the servo specs show data for BOTH 4.8V AND 6.0V, then the servo can handle the LiFe battery voltage directly from the battery itself, and thus a voltage regulator is NOT required.
