timer volume?

Is there a way to increase the timer beep volume on a 9C? In a quiet room at a distance of 6 feet my wife who has normal hearing cannot hear the beep as the timer counts down. I have bad hearing and can't hear it at all. It is a new purchase radio.

Malcolm,
If you open the music playback feature, you'll find a slider that controls the volume. Turning it up there turns up everything, including the volume of the default beeps. Hope this helps.

RE: timer volume?

Ponderosa,

You are right, the 9C has a feeble timer alarm and beep. Works great if you are flying a glider alone, but at my field with 4 or 5 noisy fixed wing aircraft and a heli or two flying, it's doubtful that I would hear it reliably. I just gave up on the timer because it was hard to hear, and several years later, I don't care anymore.

Others have 1) replaced the original little "speaker" (sound generator unit) with another louder unit (canabalized it from one of their kid's toys) or 2) soldered a pair of wires to the "speaker", ran the wires to the OUTSIDE of the case, and mounted that other sound generator unit to the front of the 9C case.

No doubt both of these "enhancements" may void you warranty. But on the bright side, Futaba 9C tranmitters are very reliable. Of course, since my 9C is long past its 12 month warranty, maybe I'll add that second sound generator...

Hope this helps.

Hi Malcolm,

Unfortunately, no, there is no way to increase the volume level on your 9C or any other Futaba transmitter othen than the new 14MZ.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also reach our Futaba support technical team at 217-398-8970, or via fax at 217-398-7721.

Sincerely,

RE: timer volume?

THis timer volume is a real issue. Along with the poor visibility of the timer display, it makes it useless for flying. In an environment with several engines running and people talking as well as wind noise, a beep that I can hardly hear at my desk is never heard in the field. Is there a hack that can be done on the 9C super to resolve this? IE tap into the beeper circuit and bring it out to the outside of the case to drive a larger, more audable speaker?

I also agree the with the timer volume problem on the 7C. If Futaba cannot increase the volume, can you come up with a replacement device (a simple piezo beeper, I would think) that beeps at a lower frequency. It's the high frequency that's as much at issue as the volume. I can hear lower frequencies. If you can recommend a proper lower frequency part, I can do the modification myself if Futaba will not.

Please, help everyone with this problem come up with a solution!

I came up with a solution. It doesn't have as many options as the built in timer, but it seems to work and be loud enough. I'll give it it's field test Wed and report the results.

Well, my new low tech timer works well. You can hear it on the flight line from about 20 ft away (that is as far away as we got). That is with my bad hearing. Now if we could just get Futaba to make one like that.

I had an external one that I could hear, but I kept forgetting to start it when flying... that was the beauty of the timer in the Futaba that can be linked to the throttle stick... to ANY position of the throttle stick in fact!...one of the reasons I bought the 7C. Now I start the timer every time I fly without fail, but it's inaudible![:@]
