That tech has been around for 15+ years. You can do the same process now with a laser and metal.

Personally I'd like it to print a couple more of me to give me a hand at work.

The wife might be less than happy about it but what the heck................

It's funny you posting this. My boss happened to see this and was freaking out over it. I honestly say it isn't as easy as they make it look.
They didn't just go scan it and start printing the part immediately. I use a 3-D scanner, from the same company as in the demonstration, and cut parts with a 3-D router so I do this kind of work every day.
If you notice the wrench they had replicated in the software wasn't even the same as what they scanned.
It takes hours to render the scan into a usable 3-D model.

In many cases it is just as easy to use calipers and build the 3-D model in the software.
DMLS technology is bad to the bone though.

We (my former employee) used 3D prototyping extensively. It produced working models to the extend that our customer(s) wanted to submit the prototypes to real testing, to which treatment of course they could not stand up.
Through the years the prototyped plastic got tougher, and could even withstand my hands doing the looking for me. Yet it still is not possible to protototype a plastic with toughness properties like nylon, or glass fibre reinforced plastics as need for strength.
Like WD said, the process needs accurate 3D data, best provided by skilled draftsmen. A X-ray scan will do for an image, but is not all that accurate to produce a 100% prototype copy.

Some rapid prototype processes can make functional parts in plastic. I prototyped a 50mm ducted fan I designed in 2000 with FDM process in ABS plastic, and have run it at 60,000RPM. Auto makers were running parts under hood in cars years ago.

Jay Leno had a similar one in his shop for producing parts for his antique cars and steam engines.

How do I get in touch with Jay Leno. I am sure he could help me find a 1953Indian Scout Motorcycle to restore? I wish I would have not traded minefor a HD 74 inch Knuckelhead!!! Capt,n

We need to get in touch with Jay Leno. I bet he could help bring back the US made Indian Motorcycle, that would sell good. Below is a phot of what I think a lot of people would buy...if it was availible with options to dress it up as you wish. Clone away!!

Best Regards Capt,n
