RE: STIHL oil ?
Right now I am using Amsoil Sabre at 80:1, so if I start mixing Stihl at 50:1, will I need to retune all my engines ? And will I need to go richer, or leaner ?
Thank you for your consideration.

RE: STIHL oil ?
With a fatter oil content you'd be getting less fuel in theoretically so I think you would go slightly leaner if anything. See how it acts first though...

RE: STIHL oil ?
That makes sense Ernie, so I'd need to adjust them richer, huh ? And I see that Stihl offers their HP Ultra in many different size containers. Which size are you gyz finding most convienent to buy ?

RE: STIHL oil ?
No Ed, with more oil and less fuel coming in you would need to go leaner, in theory. Check your tuning first though!
We went to a national go kart race once that was at quite a higher elevation and guys figured they'd have to adjust leaner which makes sense, but some didn't check for proper tuning first, went leaner..... and fried some engines.

RE: STIHL oil ?
Everything else remaining equal, higher altitude will require a leaner mixture.
80:1 = 80 parts gas to 1 part oil, 50:1 = 50 parts gas to 1 part oil. By volume the latter ratio is a leaner fuel (gas) mixtrure, you would likely need to richen your needle settings slightly but a fuel/oil ratio is not the primary reason for the necessity. All oils are not the same, some contribute energy to the combustion process, some don't. Always, always, always, readjust your needles when changing oils and or oil ratio.

Ed,
Just a side note.
If the eng is new & ya want to preserve the mfg's warranty, go with the mix ratio the gas eng mfg requires.
After warranty -and/or- if you do your own repairs, then go with Stihl's 50:1

Hi Jody
Would you mind mentioning which oils contribute energy to the combustion process. Do they burn cleaner and still lubricate sufficently? Thanks for your expertise. Brian

RE: STIHL oil ?
I used to use Amsoil and got in trouble. I mixed it at 32:1 for 20-30 cc engines in accordance with mix ratios of the factory recommended and from posts on here for small bore engines. It stuck my rings, hurt my rpm and created foul smoke and gunk on my plane. Point is some oils are not made to be mixed that rich...Amsoil being one of them. I did not trust to go 100:1 or even 80:1 Amsoil with these small gassers, so I mixed richer and got the above result.
Then, based on recommendations from TOM and others on here, I switched to Stihl Ultra HD synthetic at 32:1. (it is 50:1 oil, but this is just how I mixed it). I have a Zenoah 20cc and a DLE 30. Both engines woke up, gained lots of RPM and performed much better overall. I will stick with the Stihl HD synthetic from now on. For larger 50cc and over I will mix leaner at 45 or 50:1, based on what I have read and heard that the larger bore engines are not as oil needy.
Whatever you do, dont mix Amsoil rich like I did your motor just cant take it, it manufactures carbon and goo as a by product and will stick your ring so you lose compression.

RE: STIHL oil ?
STIHL recommends a 50:1 mix when using STIHL branded two cycle mix oil (2.6 oz. of STIHL branded oil for 1 gallon of gasoline) on all of our gasoline powered equipment.

RE: STIHL oil ?
Good point Jody. I should have just said 2.6oz per gallon to get 50 : 1 mix.
I use Stihl ultra at 40:1 in my planes and 25:1 in my Baja buggys with Zenoah G29 engines. The buggys are on WOT most of time in harsh conditions and last and last and last!
