DLE 55 oil slection?
hey everybody,[/b]
Is there someone that can help me out with which oil type to run on myDLE55?
-I've heard people mention aboutStilh HP Ultra oil;however, I hear that this engine runs onAsh-lessoil only and inot sure if that'sash-lessor not. I also have heard of lawn boy but not sure if anyone is really using that out there.
-One more question, the mix for this engine is 30 to 1 and why are people going to 40 to 1 and even higher to 50 to 1?
-if there is another forum out there that has mentioned this in the past please advise because Icouldn'tfind.
Thanks for the help,
-Andre

Any of the oils work, I use Pennzoil aircooled at 32:1 for everything. The only reason to go to 40:1 or 50:1 is it keeps the plane cleaner. Some guys think they get more power at 50:1, but you get the most power at 16~20:1. A well oiled engine will last longer too.

You can use whatever oil you are going to use from now on even in the beginning
Just don't be using Amsoil at 100:1
Most around here are using Red Line at 40:1
I use Pennzoil at 32:1 and have used that ratio for 40 years. I did use Lawn Boy until about 10 yrs ago.
Stihl Ultra has the best reputation.

RE: DLE 55 oil slection?
Thank you both for the great help.
Ill just stick with the recommendations of 30 to 1 for now until i get more comfortable with the system.
Pennzoil seems to be used by both of you, yet (w8ye) you stated that Stihl Ultra has the best reputation. Howcome you guys dont use it instead? -Just wondering because I like to get whats best.
Btw are both those two oil types Ash-less?
Thank you once again,
-Andre.

so far i have switched all my gassers from penx air cooled 40:1 to stihl ultra 40:1 used from a dle20 on up, because it is so convenient to add the 6.4 oz bottle of oil to 2 gallons of gas and get 40:1
however i did install new bearings and a Frank Bowman ring on my oldest gas motor a DL50... i followed his advice, so im gonna burn a gallon of mineral oil30:1(Lawn Girl, its all i had in the shop...) then switch back to my everyday mix of 40:1

MC-1 comes in convenient 12.8 oz bottles; 1 bottle in 5 gallons of gas gives me 50:1. Simple, no fuss, no measuring

At those times in Las Vegas was the winning choice...
What could be the best use for them now?

It seems like I have several bottles of 2002 Amsoil 100:1 I purchased at TOC.

RE: DLE 55 oil slection?
I'm glad to hear all of this advice from all of you.
I ended up going with the recommendations of 30 to 1 from HP ultra for now but it does seem alot of oil is coming out of the exhaust but I rather have a well lubricated break in.
Now tuning is my next lesson to be learned in these engines. The recommended settings appeared to be to lean on the high end that the engine would loose RPMs when raising the throttle. I went ahead and opened up the high end about a half turn and i can now reach just over 7k rpms.
The low end has great transitions and i can get the engine to idle as low as 1300 rpms so i guess ill leave it as that unless any experts think i should tweak it a little more.
Just let me know, Thank you!

Stil HP ultra, Royal Purple, Red Line, they all work just fine. I run Royal Purple at 50:1
Rich, I had to look twice when I saw the AMA number in your sig!

When I became a CD they offered me a three digit AMA number, but I turned them down, I like mine.

I use Redline 50:1 and have not bothered to research for better oil. My auto repair shop uses the same brand oil for my Benz and seems to work well for years.
It's much more important to properly tune your motor than to worry about oil brands.
Check your plug after every gallon of use to make sure you're not running too rich or lean.
That's my 2 cents.
