What are your cylinder temps? I'm curious to see how hot it runs in a cowl.

I am waiting Eagletree e-logger to see real time temps.. till now just measuring them from outside with infrared temperature gauge.

What's the reading? My engine is going into a pretty tight bearcat cowl and I know I'm going to baffle it but I just want to know the hottest accepted temps people are seeing.

Never seen over 125c usually between 95-115c.

Thank you for the info! I'm a little concerned about my engine now. I see temps in the 190-210 range on the stand at full throttle with no cowl, so I really hope my bearcat cowl won't try to cook the engine.

In my Bearcat the engine was typically in the 290-300 F range. The highest I saw was around 320 F.

Hmm that doesn't seem terrible, I guess it comes down to appropriate baffling with good airflow. Thanks for all the info!

What happened to your P-47 that you are getting rid of the exhaust and baffle?

Before our scale meeting i opened the cowl to check everything..... And i found out that for third time i had to do tappet adjustment to engine valves.. some where of the limit ( 0,1mm) but none of them was closed and i adjust them all again to 0,05mm. I didn't had in past engine needed so many times tappet adjustment in so small operating time... Maybe the engine is still breaking in or something else happens. The good thing is that all valves needed adjustment and not only from one cylinder...
Now im back with another four flights with no problem at all, the engine still starting immediately and runs very well....

Sometimes what you may see with differences in valve tappet clearance, has to do with tightness of the bolts. These need to be tightened periodically - especially I've found the ones at the bottom of the rocker covers.

Before the tappet adjustment i checked all the screws and none of them needed to be tightened....

We will see........

I was going to make my own exhaust system but I may go this route. Sent you PM.

Today i took temps from eagletree sensors, It was very hot day with 34 degrees and the max temp i saw on cylinder (No:1 127deg) ,(No: 2 119deg) and (No:3 110 degrees).
These temps get lower while engine running on idle.

Help?

I was ready to fly my Lysander so I decided to run up the FG60-R3 for a couple of tanks before trying a test flight. This is the engine I have bought from a friend on this thread.
I had been using Amsoil Sabre 100:1 for my 2 strokes but I mixed a special batch of fresh non-oxygenated gasoline at a ratio of 20:1 using the same Amsoil Sabre.
I got the engine started but it continued to run rough. I checked the cylinders and found #2 was cool to the touch. I changed the plugs and noting changed, #2 was still cool.

What do you suggest?

Scott

Does the engine already have about 1 hour of very rich running? If so, you need to lean the low and high speed needle valves until the engine is running on all cylinders. You want the low speed needle to be as lean as possible while still being able to accelerate the engine from idle to high speed without hesitation. You want the high speed needle to be as rich as possible while still providing good power for flight. Approximately 6-7 turns out on the low needle and 1 1/2-2 out on the high speed needle.

Make sure that you have the wires installed to the correct cylinder.I reversed 2 and 3 in error and the engine ran. Numbers read as if you are in the pilots seat.

Hello!

Is it possible to run this Engine with a 20x12 propeller? To small propp clearence to the ground if i use a 21" propeller.... I will put a 60R3 in my Great Planes Gee Bee, the small weight diffrence to the FG 33R3 is acceptable and after what i Heard and read the 60r3 is a better Engine than the fg33...

Regards from Sebastian in Sweden

I would think that will work. As long as the engine turns over 6000 rpm on the ground and doesn't overheat you should be OK.

Does anyone know if there is a shorter jam nut that fits the 10mm crankshaft of the 60 R3 -- preferably with the 10-32 spinner bolt hole in the end? My Seagull Lysander would benefit from a Tru Turn Cub Hub (the closest to scale spinner I can find), but the stock jam nut is about 1/4 inch too tall...

TIA for your help!

Good Choice Galen!
I've picked up a 3 1/2" black anodized TT P51 spinner for mine.

FG60-R3 Update:
My FG60-R3 is due back from HH this afternoon. The Tech notes gave the reason #2 did not fire was that the valves were out of adjustment and the plugs were all gapped too wide.
I find this strange as the engine was new when the volunteers from NASA built the H9 Corsair and they ran it, then it was won by our friend who sold it to me after running 2 break-in tanks. I guess the valves must need to be checked after the first 4-5 tanks to ensure they have not loosened. I am very surprised about the spark plug gap as they were new with the engine.

Have any of you had an experience like this?

After running about a liter through my brand new from HH 60 R3 I adjusted the valves and found four of the six had no gap. After resetting the gaps I now have much more compression -- imagine that! When doing the first start I pulled a plug to ensure spark, and my helper asked: "Is that spark plug gap correct? Looks really big to me?!" Since that was the first time I had pulled a plug I had no idea if it was right or not. The engine did start and appears to run well (maybe better now after valve adjustments) so I left it. Did HH provide a recommended plug gap?
