Default Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Hi All,

Does anyone know what the best approach is to increasing fuel efficiency on a gasser? I'd like to get 10 hr + on one without having to greatly increase the amount of fuel onboard.

uh . . .LOTS more pitch on the prop, and lean out the low-end needle and make the plane fly at 2 throttle trim clicks above idle. . .

I can fly a BME110 for over an hour on 32 ounces of gas that way.

OK, I'll bite. Why ten hours of flight time? Maynard Hill did it with a converted OS 61 4-stroke running on gas/oil and CH ignition. What exactly are you trying to do?

I need to be able to carry a payload for approximately 1300 miles for a test. I know the 31cc Honda engine would be able to make the trip but I'd have to launch the plane from the top of a car to get it up to flying speed with a full fuel load and payload on board.

Is that distance one way or closed course? I think I can find you 10hrs on a closed course.

Don't know about 1300 miles, but I have 9-10hrs at 60knots available if your payload is less than 50 pounds. I could possibly fly longer of I swap payload for gas. If interested, send me a personal mail. This is beginning to sound like a work conversation instead of my hobby.....

Were going to need some specific info to offer ideas... Like maybe engine make,size and prop used, ignition, exhaust system, fuel load, current performance data, air frame details... Is speed a factor or only time?

I find myself remembering 9-11 2001. . again.

A GPS guided drone RC aircraft is very simple to make these days . .you just gotta wonder about a persons motivations when they start asking questions like this.

Kris,

Just the opposite atcually. I'm doing research for colleges, the US military, and for weather (hurricane) research. I make aircraft that carry their payloads for testing purposes. They need more range and I'm having trouble coming up with an engine that will perform as needed. I prefer a 4-stroke but the gassers on the market today are too heavy to be converted.

Since 9/11 I have waited for someone to mention the possible use of rc planes in terrorist activities. Forget it. If the powers that be start to consider it a threat(and it really is) then you can start to wave goodbye to our hobby. I dont want to sound like a spoil sport, but.

Yakman,

You're 100% correct. One of the tests that I'm currently involved in is how to counter a small UAV that is flying on autopilot without actually having to shoot at it. One of the test criteria is that commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment has to be used. Basically something that you or I could purchase without raising any eyebrows. Pretty neat stuff and the fact that it can be used as a weapon is being seriously looked into by the US government.
