I just pulled a 22X8 Xoar off in favor of a Vess 23A which spins at 7440. You might want to try a Vess 22B.

Bob,

I think ZDZ switch to Walbro carbs now? This is at least true to ZDZ 40 F3A. One of the engines I received with diaphragm flipped.

Hey guys, I flew two hours today under the summer sun. No complain living in Texas!

Lou,

Did Vess 23A slow your SD Extra down? I am considering getting a Vess myself.

Rain and strong winds have prevented me from flying it so far but I'm sure it will give it more power and greater breaking ability. If you want to fly 3D go with a 22B but if you want to fly IMAC go with the 23A. The prop gives the engine a great flywheel effect and really allows you to tune it sweet.

3W's are shaped a lot like the Mejzlik and the TBM, looks like from photos. Do they load as much?

AirWild makes one of the best and least advertised props on the market. They are the NX Series. I have been using the NX and the 3W props and would have to say that you could argue over which props are best till God comes and sets us all straight. Altitude, climate,no two engines run the same. I just thought I would mention the NX props because you never know which prop is best until you have tried them all! I do not like the CF props. I land perfectly every time. It's when I crash that I break props!!! I would rather break the prop than the crank. I am a "woodhead" you might say!

I have tried the 22x8 TBM painted props, and they do pull the plane around good, but the 2 I bought took a lot to balance. The Vess 22B seemed to make the plane almost jump out of a hover, when needed. Plus it required very very little balanceing.

Absoolutely correct!!!!! Buried somewhere in this monster thread are multiple recommendations for the NX props.... I use them, too, and they really are very good.

So that's why I was getting low tach numbers with the TBM. I thought the engine just needed more adjusting and break in. I haven't tached the Vess yet.

I was too embarassed to post any numbers.

Love the mess of having family there. Can you hear the happiness in my voice. Dads great but sometimes I'd like to just have him help without making it in to a big hassle.

There are a few of us who have "paid to learn" that those props, although they "work", totally SUCK in terms of loading an engine. They do the job, but really eat up the torque, and that means acceleration, spool up, everything else really suffers - plus you're overheating/overloading a new engine.

Thankfully, I learned on an engine that has long since moved on to new owners....and will never install a TBM prop on any engine of mine ever again.

Harsh, yes.
But I ain't gonna kill an engine because of a stupid propeller.

Aerobob, What do you think of my xoar 22-8. The throttle input to thrust is way different than my os 120 ax on my edge. A LITTLE THROTTLE, ALOT OF PULL!!! WoW!

As expected.... gassers have a different "feel" than glow motors, for sure! Yours is doing just FINE... after you get accustomed to it, you may find you need a little throttle curve or expo to soften the middle... I adjust my curve for roughly 1/2 full throttle rpm at half stick.... not a recipe, but a solution that helps me.

I'm using expo on my throttle also. Makes it really jump up when you need it. As for the NX props, never used them but everyone I know who has says they are the same as the Xoar and very good. Bob, you could chime in on that. As for the Vess, if you want a really quite, powerful prop that spools up NOW, get a Vess. Bob, I'm convinced that once you try yours you will never look back. IMHO

PS Be sure and put it straight up and down for that extra 200 rpm LOL

Today I was putting on my wings and I heared a crack noise. The wings fit tight on the toob, and in the wing slot. Is that just a glue joint? Should I be worried? I've heard the same thing on my glow models and there fine. They fly fine. Just being paranoid maybe? Have you guys ever had that? I was having my dad help and he doesn't listen well. Thats where the problem came from. We were pushing on the ends of the wings. So I know that its not the balsa sheeting. Also I took the wing off and looked it over, it looks fine and I tryed to twist it, it is stiff. So what do you guys think?

That would depend on so many variables you couldn't even begin to address it. Let's start with, what kind of flying do you want to do?

On that Yak, Paul, mine were tight also. Wrap a 3" strip of 80 grit around a 1" dowel that's 24" long. Glue to the dowel. Carefully sand the SOCKET of each wing, using an in and out, twisting/rotating method trying to keep it evenly sanded. Check the tube fit frequently. Mine didn't take much, and as I recall, the ply root rib ended up being the real culprit as it overlapped the socket slightly, creating the bind on the tube.

Don't get real carried away with the sanding; a little is all that is needed...

Not at all. Seems silly for him to seek out another thread when a quick reply is all that's needed.

I am using a 3W 23x8 on mine, really like them. There are always balanced straight out of the package and I am getting 7200rpm, pulls like a train and I like the way it breaks the downline.
