Lou, so you think an MSC 22x8 pulls harder than a xoar? Also do you think it would be worth the shipping to order one separate from my cowl for brake in?

I've never used an MSC. The comparison was written by Patrick Roy. He works with the UAVs and knows a lot about the subject. If I were you I would buy a Vess 22B or 23A and run it but that's just my preference. He compares a 23A Vess against a bunch of 22X8 props and not on this engine. My 23A gets 7400rpm and a ton of thrust so it's not overloading this engine. The props I wouldn't buy are the TBM or a Zinger. I'm quite surprised your Xoar broke. Did you have the Beechwood ply prop that I use or the solid wood? The ply props are really resilient. You may want to get some second opinions on the MSC props from someone who has used them. Bubbagates or JrJohn may have used them in the past. Anybody want to jump in on this???

I got my cap with the DL out at the field today. I was hopeing to fly it but ended up spending the most time getting the engine to start. I first tried starting it at my house with my dad. Not even a sputter. The tank was barely full so i figured i would completely fill it and head out to the field were a someone who has experience with gassers could help. We kept going through the procedure, cholk, spin, fire, no cholk spin, start. Nothing. It would caugh once or twice but never stay running. The gasser guys were baffled. We noticed the engine had very little compression but we were not sure if that was the problem. So, we kept trying. A few times it would run for a 1-2 seconds but would always die. Someone suggested using the fuel pump to force some fuel into the carb. On a side note, one of the main problems we had today was the throttle servo was POORLY setup (nylon pushrod). It was VERY unprecise in the bottom range so we really had no idea if the throttle was closed, or at idle, or half way open. Back to starting the engine. After we flooded the carb with my fuel filler pump i went to start. Flipped it through once, nothing. Again, nothing. Once more............................BRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAA. The engine was at half throttle. I must have leaped ten feet it scared me so much. But my dad was strongly holding the plane so i was safe . The engine was running strong. FANTASTIC transition but a rough idle. We decided to kill it and try starting it again. Nothing, it burped a few times but wouldn't start. So we did the same thing with the fuel pump and got it started again. This time, one of the gasser guys walked over and said my low end was way to lean. He richened ut up and the idle calmed down. We killed it, tryed to start it again (the normal way), and it fired right up. We repeated this a couple times with success. So i guese my needles were out of wack. The gasser guys say that if the low end is too lean it will not draw fuel to well. I would have guesed it was a rich idle from my glow experiences. At full throttle the plane lifted off the ground. It has amazing power. I am getting 6200 RPMS on a xoar 22-8. And that was its first run ever . I can't wait untill it breaks in and i move to a 50:1 blend. BTW, the plane is 13.5 pounds.

Thats great cambo welcome to the family. Lou should I run a 23A on a motor thats not broke in yet? I was gonna switch to the 23 a or b once I was on synthetic oil but not now. Wanted to stay with a break in prop. My xoar was a beechwood I like a week prop so if I hit it on the ground hopefully the prop breaks not the motor or the fire wall. Thats why I don't run plywood or carbon. The prop picked up a little stick in the grass. Talk about dumb luck.[][]

Cambo you could check and tune your needles a little to get more rpms with that xoar I was running 6900 on my xoar. Or it could be your throttle linkage.

Well I'm getting 7400rpm on the 23A so I don't consider that too much of a load on a new engine. If it was only spinning 6800 I might change it but not with it's current performance.

No top speed is great but I don't fly it wide open except on take-offs. I vary the speed of the engine to cycle it and help it to wear in better. It probably has 1/2 gallon of gas through it. I went to 50:1 Belray yesterday for all of my engines.

We'll see! The 50:1 Belray H1R is probably going to offer just as much protection as a 32:1 mix of some cheap stuff. Don't forget, the idea is to get things to wear in. I'll let ya know how it works out but my bet is it will be just fine. There use to be an old saying when I was a teenager "break it in like you're going to run it" I'm going to see if that holds true with these little guys.

What kind of hinge glue do you guys use? I have flat hinges and the pacer hinge glue I used let loose on one elevator. I'm mad and a little glad it didn't reck my plane!!

Small brads work well. Hinges usually have three holes in each half so you push the brad up through the bottom and through the middle hole in the hinge half. You still have to glue them but this insures they can't pull out.

Thanks Lou. I'm Gonna go with the JXF prop that way I'll have a back up prop for when I go to a vess. When I go vess I'm gonna go 23B because your rpms are kind of hi I like to fly alittle faster.

My DL was exactly the same as yours when i frist started it. I thought I had a problem with my tank / plumbing, as the motor would run off the choke for a few seconds then die..However....I richened the LSN by about 1/16 of a turn and it ran for a little longer, allowing me to open the throttle a little and the motor kept running.
During this first tank the motor was kept as about 1/4 throttle and just got better and better, until i was so confident that the second tank was spent flying my EF around...i got that carried away though, i forgot to set my timer and ran out of gas!! No damage to the aircraft..just a little embarressing!
My DL does seem a little thirsty though.....it emptied a 20 oz tank in around 12 minutes, are you guys seeing this level of fuel consumption too?
PS: Perfect prop for this engine is a mejzlik 23 x 8...awesome!!! currently turning 7100 on 40:1, pulling my 88 yak around like crazy, hovers on 1/3 throttle

Forgot to add...i went straight onto Synthetic Oil....as recommended by Glenns Models. Halfords 2 Stroke Synthetic...about £9.50 a litre (that wont mean anything to our American friends...sorry!). Highly recommended.
