RE: CRRC 40cc kit
Started my prebuilt VVRC - CRRC 40 today for the first time. It took some time to get the carb primed but I forgot to try covering the carb with my thumb instead of just using the choke. Once primed and ignition turned on it fired after 3 flips choked and started with 3 flips after turning choke off.
It ran rough (4 stroking), bogged on throttle up and vibrated like heck but I didn't want to touch the needles till I have someone with experience there to help. I expected it to need a retuning as I started with 50:1 synthetic and I'm at a much higher elevation than VVRC. I'm just happy to hear it run for the time being! I ran it for about 3 minutes and shut her down. Then about 45 mins later I wanted to see if it would fire right back up and it did. I rechoked and it fired on 3rd flip and then on the first flip with choke off.
In between the 4 stroking it would smooth out for a few seconds so I'm sure this thing will purr once tuned correctly. Which brings me to another noob question: Do the needles turn the same for Gas? Clockwise to lean?

RE: CRRC 40cc kit
Well, I started up the kit I built. It took using my Sullivan Dynatron at 24v to get it to fire, but it started. I just let it run at 4-5k rpm so the ring could start seating and boy did it four stroke. I tried to adjust a little of it out but the needles had no affect so I put them back to the recommended starting spots and just let it run. And run… and run. It takes a little time to drain 8oz of fuel at 4-5k rpm. About half way through the tank the engine started leaning out as the ring wore, so I don’t think I’ll try to set the needles ‘til I get at couple more tanks through it, but that still depends on how the engine is acting. After around 6oz of fuel went through the engine, I was getting bored, so I hooked up my scale to my test stand and spooled up the engine. It was too cloudy to get a good tac reading, but I was getting 16.5 – 17lbs of static thrust on a Xoar 18x10. I’m very happy with the performance so far. Unfortunately, I did crack my hall mount, so I will have to get a new one, but that was just me applying a little too much torque to the mounting screw. Anyway, I’m hoping to get some more time on this engine this weekend, but I have a CRRC gf26i that needs to be broke-in first.

I actually did think of that, but my US 35cc didn't like to start at the factory needle settings upside down and I didn't want to have the carb settings in the mix. It's definitely easier to get fuel to it inverted though.
Hey, Jody... Do I need to call you guys to get a hall sensor for this thing? Parts aren't listed on your website.

RE: CRRC 40cc kit
Jody. Got my 40cc out and running again today and had someone helping me tune it. We did smooth it out a quite a bit but couldnt not get it to hold a perfect tune. Then someone pointed out that the engines backplate was spinning around freely as the motor ran. The sealant had come loose and was likely letting air into the crank.
I'd rather not wait for return service but I'm not sure which sealant to use. Before I pull it apart I want to be sure I'm going to do it corectly. So I remove the four crank case screws, carefully pull/pry the bottom half off, scrape off the sealant thats already on there, wipe clean with alcohol or gas, re-bead the sealant and put it back together correct?

N/M. Got impatient and went to town. The bottom half came off easily and I cleaned then resealed with Blue RTV. I hope it holds. It should be fine for starting by morning don't you think (approx. 16 hours of cure time?)

Woops! Sorry about that, first time for everything I guess. Your RTV should work just fine, what altitude are you at in CO?

Not a big deal; an easy fix (if I fixed it!) Will my fix void your warranty?
I am at 5800 feet in Denver, so I was running pretty rich at start up.
We got the needles way out of wack trying to tune. Now that it's re-sealed where should I start with the needles do you think?

In the words of Gordon Jennings don't do "little" jet changes. Do BIG jet changes or you'll get lost in it all. You won't know which way you are going.

Bill

RE: CRRC 40cc kit
I have Great Planes 27% Edge 540 performance series I haven't put together yet. Would this engine be a good choice? It's weight range is between 13 and 15 lbs. and the recommended Fuji 43cc engine weighs 4lbs. It looks like this engine comes in under 3 lbs.

RE: CRRC 40cc kit
IMHO I would put the CRRC 50cc in that. Tower reccomends the Fuji 43cc because that is what they carry. The CRRC 40 would be fine but the 50cc would be better. I have the Great Planes 74" Extra 300s 1.60 and figured my CRRC 40 would be too heavy so I built with both batteries in the rear of the compartment and ended up way tail heavy. I could easily get away with the 50cc in this one.
I intend to get the GP Yak 81" and throwing the CRRC 50 in it.

My C.G. Extra 330 weighs 14 lbs 7 oz. The CRRC 40 will hover it but the pull out is very slow, for the sport flying I do its a good engine but for a 3Der it would not be the best. If your AUW is 13lb it might be ok for 3D. Its turning a Vess 20A @ 6800 RPM ....Hamman

RE: CRRC 40cc kit
Nothing wrong with Rocky's engine anymore, runs like a clock and will ship tomorrow but about half of it had to be replaced. Sorry for the slight delay Rocky. Not sure what you mean about the sensors. I've installed more of them than anyone on the planet including the factory and aside from cracking out the tiny ring around the right screw on a couple I've never had one break in any way. In fact I like the way they are made, it's real easy to pop the sensor out of the housing and install an RcExl sensor in it and get away from the chronicly failing CRRC ignition.
