DL 100 Help Needed
Just got my 35% yak together. I installed a brand new DL 100 and yesterday was my first time running it. Based on everything that I've read on here and other forums, it looks like the DL is gods gift to RC....Well enter my luck. It looks like I got a winner.
I am at sea level.
I started out at factory needle settings of 1.25 L and 1.5 H....
The engine wouldn't run long and at idle would quickly die and need to be choked to restart.
After 2 tanks I've arrived at a setting of 2.5L and 1.75 H.... This setting gives me easy starting excellent transition and excellent high end. The problems start when it goes back to idle. The engine settles into a decent idle albeit high (enough to push through the wheels pretty good). But after 10 to 20 seconds the idle speeds up and without a tach I'd say about 500rpm. It will idle forever like that. Then If I open up the throttle abruptly the engine dies.
So far this is where I've found the engine running it's best. The needles don't seem very sensitive at all. You must make a 1/2 turn on the needles before a real difference is noticed. I've owned several gas engines and all have them have been very sensitive on needle movements during tuning. Which leads me to believe that there are other problems....
I'm almost ready to buy a different motor as I don't have a lot of confidence in this one....... Anyone have a idea??? I'm really at a lose..... Could it be sucking air? thanks for any help....

Sounds like something wrong in the Carb. The Emas carb on the DL100 is always, in my experience, very sensitive to needle adjustments. If you purchased the engine from a US dealer send it back for repair. If not you could try looking under the metering diaphragm, and in the passages that lead into, around and past the high and low speed needles for thin, stringy, clearish foriegn matter that is actually excess sealer from around the welch plug. The stuff is kind of hard to see because it's almost clear. I have had a couple of these come back with this problem, pretty easy to take care of if your'e carefull. I assume you have checked the obvious things like the filter screen etc.

Thanks Jody!
I had it apart and didn't see anything obvious....I will pull it back off right now and check it again though. I did check the screen and it was A-OK.....Big head scratcher...

Pulled it back apart and it looked good. I blew out the high and low passages with compressed air...I'll try it again tomorrow when I get home from work.

I posted on your other thread in FG. I think you may have a sticky main needle. Mine did the same when it was new and only happened at idle. Seems the flapper valves wouldn't build enough pressure to open the main valve. I slightly bent the part in your first photo upwards to increase the closing pressure required on the needle and its been fine ever since.
It was only about a 0.5mm change and it fixed it. I hope i explained it so you can understand it....... I know what I mean.

Look at the brass plug in the picture, some of the clear sealer has come off the plug. There is sealer used on the aluminum plug also.

RE: DL 100 Help Needed
OK now we are getting somewhere. I cleaned and blew the entire carb out....Didn't change a damn thing. I took the diaphragm cover back off and bent the flapper valve as Wiz suggested. Now I have normal needle settings and a very low idle however it is dribbling fuel out of the carb at idle and it is very rich throughout, although not quite 4 cycling.... Gonna re bend the flapper valve till it quits dribbling fuel.... Does this make sense that this is what is happening?

Did you go back and reset your needles after bending the fork?
I just started running my new DL-100 the other day, and I started both needles at 1 1/2 turns out. They were pretty close for my Stihl oil at 32:1 and 530 elevation. Temps in the mid 40's......

Flew the plane today, engine preformed flawlessly.....Burned an entire gallon of gas. Very happy with it even if it did cost me and extra $90. Still about $500 cheaper than the other engine.

One thing about the DLE 111 hub. If you've drilled props for the 100 hub they will not be indexed the same on the 111. The hole pattern is the same but the pattern was shifted a little to the "left" when viewed from the front. If your prop used to index at 2 o'clock when at compression it will reside at about 12 o'clock on the 111.
Don't be scared about the 100 hub cracks. It either does it or it doesn't. If it does it's not a hard fix and is a covered warranty item. You can easily do it yourself.
