RE: ZDZ super 80 Owners Step Inside
I received my Super 80 last night. It came with a Walbro, the head and rear plate are natural alum. color (not black). I smelled strong gas odor and oily residue inside the cylinder. They apparently gave it a thorough test run at the factory.
There are two nice throttle arms but no instruction on how to attach one. The Walbro has that choke-idle lock mechanism, which is very nice. Now I need to get me a muffler.

You got your's from TBM, right? Them mufflers aren't cheap. I might use my mig welder and make my own out of some thin sheet metal. Might just buy some straight argon and some aluminum wire and try making it out of aluminum. For what I pay for a muffler, I can get set up to weld aluminum.

mrbigg,
Yes, got mine from TBM. It's a very pretty and hunky piece of machinery. Talked to John/TBM this morning and he confirmed that the cyclinder and bak plate are now alum color. He also said to email [email protected] for instruction on how to attach the throttle arm.
Can you also make me a muffler? I try to save $ too.

c.,
If the Walbro is similar to the Walbros on my 50NGs it is pretty easy. Just remove the screw that holds the stock arm on the throttle shaft and the arm pops right off. On the choke shaft the arm is held on by the end of the shaft having been peened over the arm. Grind the peened end of the shaft away from the surface of the arm and it will pop off. Just use a find stone in a Dremel and tape the exhaust and carb throat to prevent metal contamination of the engine.
You may then install the larger arms in the most beneficial orientation for your throttle and choke linkage. Set up your choke with a servo and take advantage of the half-choke setting. Assigning the choke servo to a slider with mid-point detent works well.
You may have to flip several times...full throttle and full choke....to draw fuel to the engine for the first start. My routine is to get fuel to the carb, go to full-choke with a barely open (one or two clicks of the stick) throttle and flip till it pops, then barely open throttle with half-choke and flip till it starts....usually just a few flips will do it. 5,5, and 1 must work, but I have never been too successful with it. My engines do not have a lot of usage, so they may not be well run-in yet. Or, it may just be me!
For warm starts I always try no choke and cracked throttle, sometimes half-choke and cracked throttle seems to be needed.
Please note: This is my drill for a 50 NG, don't have any experience with the larger engines. But, they are very tempting!
My 50 NG and a 40 were very easy to tune, and the engines run extremely well throughout the rpm range...no flat spots and no hesitations or burbling.
If the Super 80s run as well as the 50 NGs you will be very pleased.

mrbigg,
I am not picky - side dump or Pitts will do as long as it does its job. I can't qualify how, though. I guess divert the exhaust, silence the bark, and not too much rpm drop will do [:@]

mrbigg,
Mine is going on a 35% Pilot Yak. That is after I try the DL100 on it first. It'll be 2-3 weeks before I get the Yak ready to maiden. I have all the servos, batteries, etc. TBM is sending me replacement wings. Take your time adding onto the house first. Thank you.

That's cool trying the DL 100 first. You'll be able to get a good comparison of the two engines. The big cowl of the Yak is a plus. We can make a bigger volume muffler so we don't choke the horsepower. I have tuned pipes sitting here, but there's no tunnel on the M12. If it was a mono wing , I'd just put on the bottom of the fuse.

Super08,
Transpose the numbers in your call name and there won't be any mistaken identity.
I bought mine after watching a video of a Britt flying the Pilot 35% Yak with this engine. The timing was right since I had just bought the same Yak, and TBM had just bought RCShowcase. I could not resist the discount.
I have just sold my 30% TOC Extra, and will be selling my Laser 120 to make room.

Britt flying Pilot 35% Yak: you can hear how your future Super 80 would sound like - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opvNfVVWxYQ
A different guy flying a SD 35% Yak, which is >2lbs heavier than the Pilot. The Super 80 has foamy power in this one. Too bad, we can't hear the engine sing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frROI...eature=related

RE: ZDZ super 80 Owners Step Inside
I just removed a DA 85 from my 75cc Yak and replaced it with a ZDZ Super 80.
I had spent $ 400 chasing the muffler problem with the DA 85. I really like the
ZDZ 80. I'm thinking about throwing the DA in the trash can where it belongs.

Mine arrived today. Very nice engine, the castings are flawless. It looks like they are pre-run at the factory as it smells of gas and the exhaust port has a slight brownish tinge to it. Nice they include arms for the carb. Mine has the Walbro WJ71 on it.
