Goldberg Edge 540

In march at a swap meet I landed a Goldberg Edge 540 (I believe to be the 77" version, but didn't measure, it doesn't have the original covering) airframe for $30 in need of a bit of repair (after being flown like that airframe is supposed to be flown... I have a friend with one, impressed...) but nothing serious. All up weight should be around 14-15lb

I like many of you guys am on a low budget, I've got the tools to make a few chainsaw engines I have floating around work. My choice is a Poulan 46cc (what Brillelli used as a base) as it is the only one I have in the desired size range. My friends is powered by a DL 50 and is way over powered (just about right) so I figured the 46 would be plenty.

my friend seems to think you need very large servos for this thing along wtih dual servos on the wings, trying to see what others think.

anyone have one of these? any setup tips? I can get some from the setup of my friends but wanted other opinions. I'm not going to get started on this until mid winter if not spring but it doesn't hurt to ask

Thanks!

These Hitec servos should be plenty good for that plane

Digital $54.99

or more economical analog $35.99

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XUZ89&P=ML

The new brillelli still has the parts to convert your Poulan 46. This should work out well for you $106

Ignition $46.95

If you could come across a ECHO 50 (CS530), Brillelli has the parts for them and it will be much like the BME 50 and it will hang right in there with the DA 50. The crankcase on this engine is layed out the same as the Poulan 46 but the cylinder looks more like a Sachs. In the picture it says Kioritz on the side of the mounting lug. The short blocks are a SB1080 I think? If you shop around the new SB can be had for just under $200 + shipping http://www.norwalkpower.net/store/pc...-407p55133.htm

I have two spare RC EXL units and a lathe, I'll have about $50 in the engine when I'm done... I got 3 RC EXL units for about $100 a year ago along with an old CH or something box that is in the radio shack project box

will I need two servos of that size in each wing or would 1 be sufficient? and that would work fine for running knife edge passes on the rudder?

Thanks W8ye

One on each aileron should be good enough

How was the wing set up originally? Did it have two on each aileron? If it did, I would drop down to the 625 series servos

I had one with the Brillelli 46 in it and single 5955s in the ailerons. plenty of power and lots of fun, just not as floaty as some of the newer, lighter designs.

Is the 46cc conversion as lite as a DLE50? Just Curious. Capt,n

The poulan 46 is about as light weight as an engine this size can be.

The only cutting to do on it is to cut off the original chain shaft.

RE: Goldberg Edge 540

just looked at the wings, it has holes for two servos in each wing, that's easy enough to solve though. I think I'll go with two 645's just for good measure and the biggest I can come up with for the rudder, probably two 645's for the elevator. Man, that's a lot of money in servos... If I don't get to it until march I might wait until the swap meet...

the poulan 46 is supposed to be one of the lightest high power conversion engines (or was when it was more plentiful), which is why I got the thing 2 or 3 years ago. Now the Echo's are more sought after, the only ones I seem to be able to get my hands on are the 21cc.

Thanks for the tips and opinions!

I found a chain saw (refurbed) with a Poulan 46 in it for $105 a year or so ago. The engine is still in the chain saw and it may just stay there. I like the Poulan 46, but I have newer engines that I bought for $170 from Hobby King that are lighter, stronger and ready to bolt onto a model airplane's firewall.

The Poulan 46 is a proven entity that you can get parts for from many sources

The Chinese engines from Hobby King are a crap shoot and if there is someting wrong with it, you throw it away and buy another.

However, we are only a skip and a hop from all the chain saws being made in China also.

Anyone know the best place to get refurb. Poulan 46's? Also, the homelite 33cc Powerstroke engines (Bandit, Ranger saws) make awesome engines as well but are becoming harder to find.

I found mine used (seems to have really good compression) on craigslist with a smaller craftsman saw for $30 together... first one was on ebay for about $30 shipped.
