Greetings soldiers,

I fly dash-8's for a living ,but my knowledge in the real world pales in comparison when it comes to the complex world of rc flight. So I am here to seek the help of you guys with the invaluable experience and insight.

My challenge is this : I recently bought a "CMP T-34 Mentor " and am seeking help in setting it up . So far i bought , 5 Futuba s3004 servos, 2 Hitec HS-75BB Retract BB Servos,
1Hangar 9 2.25" Aluminum P51 Spinner, 2 Du-Bro 3" Treaded Lite Wheels andan AR6110e Receiver( need help choosing a battery).

I have 13 years experience as a Machinist and full access to a macine shop at the moment. I need to know whether my above choices are ok and whether you would have chosen differently , also whether i missed anything.

I've done alot of research and came across a few problems with the mentor , mainly the nose gear problem (i may modify it if necessary)

The main reason im here is , I think the glow engines are beautiful , however where i live (Saint Lucia) I dont think many people can afford to run these engines,considering the rediculous cost of nitro fuel let-alone availability or lack of.

The gas engines with the electronic ignition is beautiful , however i really dont want tobe running 2 batteries in my aircraft.

So...finally my question is :CAN IT BE DONE?A stringtrimmer enginefitted in this .40 sized t-34 mentor .....my options are limited when it comes to types and sizes of engines ...the smallest i may get my hands on is the weed eater feather-lite 20 cc string trimmer.

Please let me know what you guys think.

the featherlite 20cc engines are light for what they are, but on the stock ignition you would have to shorten the nose by at least a couple inches or add a bunch of lead in the tail to get it to balance. On Electric Ignition they trim down to about 2 pounds minus ignition module

you would be better off with one of the 15/17/20cc engines that are recently available

String trimmer engines less than about 21cc tend to not have enough power to be a viable power source for model planes

Fox Manufacturing Company has a .50 cubic inch gass engine but it has battery ignition.

There is a .40 gas engine made in Italy that should work. It is found in small RC cars...but converting it for airplane use should be easy. Capt,n

See my response in your other post on an engine for this plane. Another thought is to select an glow engine that uses no nitro fuel to reduce your fuel costs.

wow ....guys thanks alot for the speedy replies ....It wont be a problem for me to shorten the nose of the engine if necessary ...i would do whatever it takes to take some weight off ....i may even do some spot drilling to get some off......as for the benefits of using the electronic ignition , i really want to have a minimum of one battery on this aircraft. so i am willing to accept a heavier craft ...but what do you guys think about the particular aircraft in question ....can it handle these engines and will they fit into the cowl ...also the flight characteristics.....thanks.</p>

Gas engine in this car...see photo.....For more help...post a photo of your airplane....with specs. Thanks Capt.n

Sorry about the pics , the carft is still in the box im really trying to source all the equipment before i begin the build ....at which point i will post pics of this project ...including the modification process of both engine and nose gear when necessary .....as for the engine on the rc car (i like it ) where can it be found.</p>

You should use a different receiver. The AR6110e is designed for park flyer use. It is not a full range receiver. Use the AR7000 instead.

My job summons me .....gotta go do a dash-8 run throughout most of the caribbean till midnight this evening (christmas blues) ....I thank you-all for your valuable contributions ....I would appreciate some indepth insight into my proposed project .....and some ideas as to the equipment you would have chosen for this aircraft ...ie. ,servos , receiver and battery , gas engine, carburretor, muffler , prop and spinner ...and also wheel size......
