RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Cool Jim. Shes going to become one of your favorites. Good luck with tuning out the gurgle. I can just get to the needles to adjust with the compact. Cant wait for the video. It might be a bit before I even start mine..snow snow snow. I can't run mine at home..developement no no. Have to take it to the field.

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Gregg,
With the carb rotated 180 degrees and with the Jtec standard pitts muffler it is real hard to reach the needles. I had to get a small flat screw driver and bend it 90 degrees so I could adjust the needles. It works but I still have to remove the cowl to do it[:@]. I think I just my have it and I hope the weather holds for this weekend to give it another try;) |
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Cool..ast least you don't have to remove it, then standard, then back to Pitts. A bent flat head. May be able to find one or two around here. Got a few flying buddies that fit that description.:D

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
I know you can rotate the carb 180 degrees with no problems, but can you roate the engine backplate 90 degrees to have the needles on the side. I don't know if the cover is ported and only has one position, and I know I can get a informed decision here instead of taking the engine apart.

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
On the inside of the engine, the backplate has relief on one side to clear the piston skirt. Therefore, the backplate can only be in one position and that is with the relief side towards the piston.

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
hi Foxy
I maidened my 60 stick yesterday. it has the dl20 mounted. fuel tank at cg. servos mounted at rear. with ma 16x8 prop it is awesome! straight up outta sight forever. it putts around at half throttle at old farts speed. it is a perfect combination. sure glad that i "discovered" this great combo. if you love lots of power and straight up ability, then you will be a happy pilot! and it will hover at approx 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. only thing that i am a bit nervous about is that i have about half gallon of 30:1 mix fuel thru it, and she is still spitting black out of the exhaust. i am fairly new to gasoline engines and not sure what is normal for breakin. but so far it is a strong running engine. RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Try it with a Vess 17-6 and you will be even more impressed.
|
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
A 17-6 prop sounds good for 3D. How about for speed for a sport plane? I have been using an APC 16x7 and 16x8 to pull my GP 70" Revolver, and it moves nicely (including very good if not unlimited vertical). Am now looking at using an APC 15x10 or 15x12, to increase airspeed. I've also read that Xoar props are pretty efficient. Any thoughts on the best props for speed for this engine?

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
hi all
Looking for information guys. I have 1/2+ gallon of fuel thru my DL20 now. I have been flying it at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle with big loops at full throttle. I am still getting black gunk out of the exhaust. not sure what is normal, or if i should even be getting black crap out. I am running a ma 16x8 prop. someplace between 28:1 and 30:1 mix ratio. the hi speed adjustment is: opened up till engine started slowing down a d then back in just a tad till engine peaked back up some. Low speed jet: leaned out till engine would starve when hitting throttle, then opened up till it stumbled on open throttle, then leaned out till it answered throttle cleanly. am i missing something or is black stuff the norm for gas engines on breakon? at 1/4 throttle or so the engine runs 4 stroking. leans out to normal at hi throttle. help me out with info guys Bruce aa2dd |

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Thanks for the replies,aa2dd and ghoffman, love the picture. I was worried about the temperature being in the 30s this week end.
|
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Thanks, but I am hoping it will get into the 30's this weekend. I think flying in windy, cold, and generally lousy conditions, makes you a better pilot. So does crashing my AJSlick in front of everybody! A couple of guys had the new 3D Hobby Shop foamy, and for a $59 airplane, WOW! Everybody has to have one.

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Hi,
I have the Great Planes P6E Hawk ARF and want to go gas. The projected weight range is 10 -14 lbs, 76" wing span, 1441 sq in total wing area. Recommended engines .90 to 1.2 four stroke and .60 to .90 two stroke. Is the DLE 20 up to the task? Great Planes website lists the DLE 30 as acceptable. Not being familiar with either engine which would provide good flight characteristics? Joe |

Flyalot,
I am flying the Great Planes PF-17 with a DLE-20 and a Xoar 17x6 prop and I have more than enough power. This Little engine spins that Xoar 17x6 ay 8200RPM and creates 14lbs of thrust. So your answer is yes the DLE-20 is up to the task. [X(] The DLE-20 will fly anything a 4 stroke 125 will fly;) Here is a pic of Great Plans PT-17. It weigh's in at 13.5 lbs and has a 71.5" wing span. |
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
flyalot - from what I've seen Great Plane's engine recommendations are on the conservative side. Their upper power range is the minimum I'll install. I currently have a DLE 20 in my 70" Revolver and it's a perfect fit (though GP's higher recommendation a 15cc). And not that a 76", 14lb plane won't fly scale with a DLE20 - it might. But you also might have no power to spare. And for just another $50 you can get a 50% larger engine? No question - I'd go with the DLE30.
|
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
I agree. A bud has one with a 91 4 on her..and it flew scale. DLE 20 would be more theen enough.
Jim..video yet?? |
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Gregg,
I am still waiting for the video my friend took last Saturday at the field. I had a dead stick on the maiden flight and had no troubld with the dead stick landing. This PT-17 is a joy to fly. ;) I tool the plane home and work on the needles and I think I now have the DLE-20 tuned right. I hope I can get some good weather for another flight this weekend. sunday looks like it might work out we are getting rain that might tuen to snow Friday night[:@] |

Hi all,
Perfect day today for the first flight. Still air, 18deg Celcius and sunshine after a rainy week. The EDGE,although tail heavyflew nicely with its light wing loading. Two 10 minute flights logged. Although the engine was still under running in, the plane had out of sight verticals effortesly. Unfortunately, the GLASAIR was destroyedin the first flight due to radio batteryfailure after 5 minutes on air. Both DLE 20 workedlike swiss watches. |
RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
I am very sorry to read about the crash. That sure was a nice looking airplane. I could just about cry thinking about it. Capt,n

ran the engine earlier, ran great! Ill get a final pic of it all completed when i get the cowling clear coated and the wheel pants on after i get it broke in and set good, this is a gp extra .60 kit and it weighs 9lbs with a tme smoker installed as well. wing loading looks to be similar to my gp extra .40 kit so I think its going to work out well! |

I had a few minor probelms that have all been corrected now. The plane is now flying great. from the video you can see how well the DLE-20 fly's the PT-17 with that Xoar 17x6 prop.;) |

Great video & loved the music!
You'll still need to re-route your plug wire. NOT good to be sitting between the muffler pipes. |

Jim,
Since the video I have rerouted the plug wire around the muffler and that is a Xoar 17x6 prop. Sorry about that.:D |

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Good job Jim. Nice video and editing. Just enough time to trim her out I see. Can't wait for weather to break in Jersey. I may be able to at least run the engine Saturday or Sunday. Our field is reported to be accessable, but little snow covered still with a bit more crappy weather tomorrow. As long as I can get to the tables, I'll be happy to get a few tanks through her since it should be 40 degrees or above. Even though the PT-17 takes a bit more to put togeather, I'm sure you will be flying it a lot this season.

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
Hi again Foxy ... Just a follow up. I have about a gallon or tad more thru my DL20/Big Stick 60. All I can say is AWESOME. this motor is getting stronger every flight. with 16x8 prop it is a screaming machine. the engine runs absolutely perfect and very strong. i want to try a 17x6 and see if it will slow the plane down a bit at full bore. so far, this engine is perfect! love it!!!!!! BR1,
Take some video of it I would love to see that bueatiful plane fly with the DLE-20 in it. I know what you are talking about when you say winds for I am from Lake Arrowhead, CA and I had to move to memphis for work. I sure miss that California winter weather.:( |

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
BR1 - Just did a search on the Thunder Tiger Rare Bear and found this RCU thread, talking about mods to fix some issues on that plane. Perhaps you were already aware, or they've fixed these issues. Just an FYI. Nice looking plane, btw.
