Is it mandatory to mount Gas Engines Inverted?

Hi there all,

As I'm new to gassers and my plane is in a process of getting there to hit the flying field. My plane is Yak 54 120 and DLE20 is the motor. Is it mandatory to mount the Gas engines inverted? I've seen they are on 90 degrees angle sideways as well here on some thread. Is it due to muffler or is it possible we can mount those engines 90 straight or would it make a difference in engine's performance?

I've been told and read that mounting glow engines inverted either 2 or 4 stroke changes engine's behavior a lot?

I just wanna know your experiences.

Thanks and happy flying[8D]

First question would be, why would you want to?

The muffler configuration usually makes mounting them inverted preferable.

The engine itself wont really care.

Is it due to the model's design as well as your convenience what fits well to the plane.

Engine's demeanor won't change?

The engine won't care, but if you land nose down the inverted engines cylinder will take the abuse. I mount all of my gas engines inverted, and I do have less than perfect landings, but I have not yet destroyed an engine. JMTCW.

About the only thing I could think of, is if you're clueless on how to start a gas engine, inverted might be a (very) little more prone to flooding.

As for fuel draw or engine performance, there is no functional difference that I know of.

Many people prefer not to have a cylinder head sticking out of the top of a cowl.

I'm installing DLE20 on stock beam mount and the plane is Yak 54 120, I first thought to install it side ways, but it did not look good and just like you said, exhaust cylinder sticking out downwards looks more cool. I'm gonna install it inverted as I've seen a lot of people doing it.

Thanks again for the input.

This same thread/question has been posted a few days ago. Same good answers pop up here.

Yep, and no flying inverted allowed. The engine will die a horrible death.;)

It is a fashion and conditioning thing I think. Here even the bench mounts for break in shows up inverted.Silly.Only conditioning and not to be conscious.
Exhaust can be mounted both ways in same manner.

My MVVS 26 gasser was very happy with the sylinder pointing upwards, go figure:)

It is mandatory to mounted a gasser inverted.

In Australia you mount them right side up

I won't consider it unfortunately, though I heard about glow engines change their behavior while being installed inverted. It's not glow's thread so I'd stop talking about glow motor:D

Does this principle go installing the engine inverted with front end carb and rear end carb too? How about NGH engines which have front end carbs? I've seen a lots of videos installing the engine upwards direction. That's for sure gas engines direction won't matter engine's behavior either direction it's installed?

Thats for sure it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter with glow engines either for the most part if the fuel system is setup correctly.

The ONLY way any of this might matter,
is if ya bought one on Feb 30th.[&:]

gas engines start easier inverted glow engines are easy to flood inverted takes a touch to do it reliably

A glow engine will collect unburned oil at idle and snuff the glow plug when inverted but I don't think you will have any of that issue with a gas engine at all.

Be wary of the mounting police. They'll be sure to make life miserable!

Great info,

I really appreciate your inputs guys. Yak 54 120 is kinda a plane which needs to have inverted engine, and I'm gonna mount DLE20 on it inverted. No matter what angle which side the Gasser is installed, it would work:D

Did you get your Yak 54 from NitroPlanes? If so is it the 69inch span version? Thats what I bought! Capt,nhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../thumbs_up.gif

Ya got it right. I have the same Nitro plane's Yak 54 120. Some guys here told me that they got 72" wing span and I have not measured mine yet is it 72" or 69". I'd hopefully find out as I'm gonna use the stock beam mount on it with DLE20 inverted:D.

Have ya measured your wing span yet?

I'd keep ya posted so verdict is, inverted installation is mandatory[8D]

I mounted mine right side up, but then again I plan to fly upside down a lot.  [8D]

Which engine did you mount right side up and on what plane?

that particular Yak 54 minus the covering job is a Quique Somenzini Yak sold for 3 times less than he was selling them for

there was a huge discussion about it a couple of years ago
