How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Hello guys,

I have a seagull edge that uses 2 inverse servos (they must move in the opposite direction as they are installed in the opposite side of the tail).... Thus, I have one of the elevator plugged in the GEAR channel mixing with the elevator. However, I am installing a killswitch and I do not know how to install it in my receiver. I have a AR6100 with a DX7.
Thus I have:
Elevator : 1 servo elevator
Gear: 1 servo elevator (mixed with the elevator)
Aux 1: I would like to plug here the killswitch but I do not know how to mix it as I think this channel can only be used with flaps??? I do not understand.... could anyone help me?

I do not have installed any flaps in this plane thus I hope somebody can help me with a way of mixing the AUX1 so that I can turn on/off my kill switch with that...

thanks

can you use a y-harness for the elevator. that will free up a channel for you.

AR6100 is a park flyer receiver, totally unusable in that size model with either a gas or glow engine.
You should go with an AR7000, that will allow you to run independent channels for the ailerons and elevators and a free channel for the ignition kill.

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Hello, thAnks for answering. It is 6200 im sorry, dual satellite.
I used to use a Y reversing harness because the servos are in opposite sides and they need to work in the opposite direction. However, the Y harness started to fail and one of the elevators lost connection. Thus i decided to take it out and use a mixing to place safe.
I would like to avoid to buy a 7ch receiver if i dont need to given that i need only on/off in the aux1 and i dont have/need flaps in my edge.... Any ideas how to set up the aux1 for on/off????

Thanks

You can also use a Smart-Fly servo combiner("Equalizer II") for the elevator halves from one receiver jack. I prefer these to mixing from the Tx. They are easy to get right and matched. Ihave used these to match two servos to a rudder (both push/pull with rod linkage)and they are able to completely eliminate binding of the two servos on one control surface.

I would use a switch off the throttle channel, and when you move the servo below idle it pushes on the switch killing the engine. You can use a leaf switch with a sensitive lever that you can push against with a wheel collar on the throttle pushrod.

You can also mount one servo higher or lower than the opposite and invert to work in the same direction. Good luck, red

On the right you will note under DONT the use of reversing Y harnessess with Spektrum equipment.

I have several planes set up this way and never a problem with any of them. In fact build a scratch built sweet and Low giant stick and setting up the elevator that way.

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Hello, I managed to do it finally but it doesn't work 100% as I would like to....
I used the AUX1 as normal configuration linked to flight mode 1 to turn on/off and works pretty good.
However, I am using the GEAR channel for the dual elevators. I slave ELEVATOR - GEAR..... 100% and they move together. However, in the up direction both servos have the same travel. but in the down direction the elevator (the one plugged to the gear channel) has less travel than the elevator plugges into the elevator channel. I tried increasing/decreasing the travel of GEAR but not improvement......
I prefer to avoid the Y inversing harness as I used it already and it failed by stopping one of the servos! I was lucky to manage to land it safely.... so, no risk it again....
My ATV for elevator and gear are 100% in both directions.
any ideas of why????

thanks...

I would check the end point settings for the one servo that is a little short on the throw. You should be able to adjust the end point for that channel to increase its throw in that one direction.

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

I checked the end point of the gear and it doesn't change....
I decided to buy a hitec program servos ( $ 40) as I have all HS5625 servos (metal and digital). I think I can reverse from CC to CCW?????
it would be the best thing to do I think... and I just use a normal Y harness (not reversing), just the simple one as the one i have in the ailerons.......

what do you guys think?

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Yup, you sure can reverse Hitec digital servos, in fact I ran that exact setup in a 30cc Yak with HS-5625's.
OK, happy to hear that was just a typo on the receiver model[8D]
With a 6 channel receiver and the elevators on a Y, you should be able to eliminate the Y on the ailerons, having the second aileron on channel 6 (normal flaperon mix) and the ignition kill on the gear channel.
Good luck,
Pete

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Thanks for answering... I think I'll keep the Y harness in aileron and then add the normal Y harness for elevator (one servo reversed)....
then I will keep the kill switch in the gear channel and I'll have free the aux1 again....

As I mentioned, for a reason, the travel limit in the elevator of gear channel is not the sameone as the elevator in the elev channel. thus, when applying important input of elevator during flight the plane dives! I guess it is due to the difference in travel...

thus, reversing one of the servos of the elevator should clear my problems....

I do not doubt it can be done thought mixing but I spent too much time already and I was not able to fix the travel limit issue.... thus $ 40 might be a decent investment in the long term......

I guess I didn't make my post clear. No need to buy a reversed servo. You can simply reverse the servo arm (remove and rotate the arm 180 deg.) on one of the servos. Sometimes the geometry is OK, but, to do it correctly, you must have the center of each arm and the control horn in the same horizontal plane. Good luck, red

Programmable servos are the way to go, that way you can both reverse the servo, and exactly match the end points.

The programmable servos require a programmer. Some of the other ideas are more cost effective. I like the programmable Hitec servos, but there is an up front cost. I just looked up the programmer, and it is $27(basic model) at Servo City. Can you mix AUX1 with the elev. and use the gear channel for the switch?

Hello, thanks... I understood the idea but if i do so, the servo arm will not be levelled with the elevator anymore, actually it would be to inclined... I would have to move the servo upper in the fuselage and I am not sure I would like to do that..... I hope I understood what you meant.... thanks for your idea!

I bought the
Hitec HPP-21 ($40)

it should be good for what I want according to what I read in the description... It's not too bad I guess... I might use it again in the future.....

Or flipthe servoend-for-end in the same cut-out and shorten or lengthen the control rod.

O.K I 'm going to put a stick in the bees nest and say this. Why not set up your throttle linkage so that when you hit the throttle cut button on your transmitter it kills the engine? Then set up your fail safe so that the throttle goes to idle if there is a signal loss. Add a quality switch to turn on the battery power and your done. No mixing, stirring, shaking, or anything else. KISS. Think about it.... how many big glow engines have kill switchs? None. I have the RCexel kill switchs on my gassers and when a brand new one went bad, Idid just this. Also leave the spring on the throttle connected and if your linkage breaks then again it goes to idle. Here come the bee's http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...n/punching.gif

How many glow engines have butterfly valves?  None.  It's hard to kill many gasoline engines with throttle alone - especially one without a remote choke.  Some leak enough air around the butterfly to keep chugging.  Not all gas engines are electronic ignition.  ;-)

I have my Zenoah Z26 and Fuji 32cc (both magneto ignition) on a throttle kill lever marked with red fuel tubing - just like for my glow engines - but the lever not only bottoms out the throttle but also operates a servo that closes a microswitch and grounds out the spark.  I also have a low idle/taxi switch beside that one that takes me to lowest sustainable idle (with the throttle stick bottomed out) that I use for landing.  The KISS Principle that way keeps everything I fly consistant for engine use.

RE: How to install a kill switch in a 6ch setup that uses already a dual elevator???

Hello,

Finally I got the hitec programmer console. It was very easy to invert the rotation of servos and then problem solved! I just added a normal Y harness and now I do not need an extra channel for it... I left the kill switch in the gear channel.

By the way.... about the issue I had about the travel limits in one of the servos... I connected both servos and stranged but one of them didn't have the center point in the same point than the other! that is why the travel was different! I restored to 'original settings' and the problem is gone!.... weird because I had NEVER used any console to program the digital servos.... no idea.... anyway, it is solved!.... I think the console is a nice tool for $ 40....

Thanks for all the help!
