is it better to balance this prop for a q100b after you drill the center hole or before , with the center hole it came with?

Definitely after, and you need to use a proper reamer to enlarge the center hole. A drill bit won't drill it centered.

The best tool is AV8TOR's recommendation. It will give you the best centering. Balance it after you drill it. If you can without too much sanding, you're lucky. Tell us how it came out. Dan.

Terrific tutorial. However, I always wonder why we are trying so hard to balance the prop on a single cylinder engine that is inherently unbalanced. That being said, I still balance all my props and re-balance them if there is any damage to them.

Try here. Your best best is to use one with a replacable pilot. Your local machine tool stores should have them. Dan.

For wood props, instead of sanding on the heavy blade to lighten it, what is wrong with just spaying some urethane on the lighter blade? Seems to work fine for balancing and you do not mess up the prop's finish. Of course, ifone buys props that are not close to start with, then this does not work until you get the prop close.

Len, I spray the lighter side all the time. Just wait for the material you spray to dry completely before you check the balance. Dan.

Hi. Name is Ken (Starfighter). I agree that spraying the lighter blade with Urethane is a great way to balance a prop. Also, try using Medium CA too on the tip of the light blade. Just squirt it on, then wipe off the excess, quickly. But, don't disturb the glue until it sets up so the finish stays smooth. I actually prefer the CA as it doesn't wear off over time.

I have used CA and epoxy to balance the hubs. Epoxy, when I have needed a lot of weight.

But, I have found it is best to start out with quality props versus looking for the least expensive ones. Last week one of my friends came over to balance several 15" props. On one, it just would not balance.  After looking at it closely, you could even see the center hole was slightly off-center. The other three were O.K.. ?
