G-38 Conversion to CM-6 Plug?

I would like to convert my magneto equipped G-38 to a CM-6 spark plug so it will fit inside the cowl on a scale plane. I already have the adapter for the plug but the original plug boot does not fit the CM-6. Can the plug lead just be pulled out of the coil and the boot end replaced. Will the engine run ok with a CM-6 plug? Has anyone done this?

G 38 does not use a shielded ignition system and the CM6 plug is not a register spark plug.

You are asking for trouble trying to use a CM6 spark plug without changing to a shielded ignition system.

Agaperacingandhobby.com out of Richmond VA.has a complete RcXcel ignition that will convert your mag to ignition. This conversion is easy to do and will reduce some of the weight associated with mag ignitions. As stated above, you cant just change the plug, the whole assembly needs to be installed.

To save build height, we have replaced the Zenoah HT wire+ plug cap with RCexl parts, including shielding, resistor and CM6 plug boot kit (or 1/4" plugs kit). With the resistor in place, all is OK; no interference on 2.4GHz systems, good spark.

another option is to use a 5/8" hex taper seat plug like the NGK BMR6F.
by cutting off the threaded post and using a small conical spring in the cap to make contact with it you will come out shorter than a CM-6 with adapter AND it is a resistor plug.

Thanks for all the info. I may just convert to electronic ignition. I'll check agap's web site.

Rcextreme power has ignition setups for the G38

I would call CH Ignitions!!  IMHO simply the best.

Neat trick I hadn't thought of ZAGNUT. Thanks for the tip!

The correct spark plug is the NGK BPMR6F

The RCexl conversion to CDI ignition is plug and play.

Use the cm6 cap also use a silicon type wire.. Add a ring termanial to the other end.. Crimp it with the ring for the cap slid your heat shrink in place. Grind the eye to the engine.. Bit make sure you install your resistor!! Or do the electronic conversion..

hi maxx , do you need to use a CM6 PLUG with all CH IGNITIONS? for the best spark. im talking about with quadra engines
with CH setup

After asking this question, I decided it was too much trouble. Bottom of the plug boot only sticks out about 1/8" and I need the hole in the bottom of the cowl for exhaust pipes and exit air. Left it original, with magneto etc. Starts easy and runs good. Decided not to fix what ain't broke.

You can install the 14mm to 10 mm Bushing in your engine.. Use the cm6 plug.. Use a cm6 plug cap with the resistor. To ground the plug cap use a piece of wire crimped to the plug cap! And growing it to your engine. It will work

Of do the recxell ignition cconversion. If you need a pic of what I'm trying to tell you here. Shoot me an email. Or pm so I can send you the pics of how it's done.

Very easy to convert, remove mag and flywheel, replace flywheel with adaptor in the kit, fit pickup to coil mounts, refit prop driver and connect up ign module.

Cheers

Also,
If you ARE going to convert your G-38 to electronic ignition don't forget to add about 12 ounces in nose weight to make up for the 12 ounces you will lose off the engine in magneto parts and coils!

warbird72 09-21-2013 07:01 AM

If you just do what I suggested you can still use your mag with your engine.

warbird72 09-21-2013 07:03 AM

If you send me an email I will show you what and how to make it work!! I have done it to several quadras. And never missed a beat!!
