BTW, the ad for the new RCG 26 beam mount engine is in the latest AMA mag. BP hobbies sell them I think it said. 32 oz. all up weight, sounds good since the 20cc's are 29oz AUW if I remember right.

Generally speaking, I think the quality and care in the making of O S engines is excellent. However, I will give 3 reasons why I won't buy the GT 33 model.

1. Price. Way too high IMO.

2. Tendency to run backwards when hand started. I think O S made a comment about this, saying they designed their engines to be started by an electric starter which provides greater torque and starting rpm than a hand flip can provide. I agree that is true and safer than hand flipping but I prefer to hand start my gassers as I believe the majority of gas engine guys do. A matter of personal choice.

3. The prop shaft on the GT 33 is 8mm. An engine this size usually requires at least an 18 inch prop. Almost all props of 17 inch or greater comes factory drilled at 10mm. You therefore need a bushing of some sort to properly center the prop on the shaft. O S should have made the prop shaft at 10mm.

Whether you find these 3 things picky or not makes no difference to me. They are the reasons I won't buy one. I'm not saying O S doesn't make a good engine, as I am sure they do. I just find these things cause me to look at other brands in this power range.

Mintor's have a dubious rep over here in the states.

Mike is dead on about the OS, its a very nice engine but it's not cheap and unless you run APC props it will need a shim.

As for starting I can get it to hand start most of the time if you give it 1/4 throttle or so and flip it briskly.

Go with the dle    cheap and have a good service if you buy throught troy built models.   I usually run either a da or dle.  I have a da120   it is a beast,  I run a dle55 in my aerobat and have two years on it.  Starts real easy and runs great.  I have had issues with a dle 30, but have also had issues sith a da60.  Service is very good on both of those however.  I guess the big difference is supposed to be htat the da engins last longer, perhaps better bearings.   How many people have engins that outlast the airframes anyways   LOL

As you say okdreamin, the Fairchild is coming in heavy. I will probably use an engine with a weight that allows cabin mount for elevator servos.

The OS hand starts backwards sometimes, when throttle setting is wayyy down. As I mentioned before, I move the throttle trim up to full and it hand starts in the right direction every time, easily. It's no big deal

As I recall, the PTE36R did the same a few times early on....None of the DLE's I've run have done that; they just start and run easily. But I've not used the standard CDI for any of my DLEs, only Bill Carpenter's CDI (a great gizmo, BTW).

Ditto for my Syssa's; simply choked'm and flipped 'm often only once....

The great thing for the OP is the fact that there are a bunch of choices any more in this size range, where 5 years ago one had only a coupleoptions available. This size rangerepresent afairly large market and I expect to see even more competition from the various sources with some very good, light, powerful, simple to operate and maintain offerings. We all benefit!!

I don't know for a fact why that happens but I will take a guess. I suspect the timing is very advanced and with the relatively slow speed of a hand flip, the engine fires too soon driving it backwards. The high speed and torque of an electric starter establishes the rotation which overcomes the likelihood of kicking back the other direction.

Probably. The ignition is set not to fire until the equivalent of a few hundred RPM though, so you have to give it a pretty brisk flip to begin with or the ignition won't even fire

Most any 2 stroke engine can run backwards. But not with any power or throttle ability. The timing is too far after TDC (retarded) in reverse for anything other than a low idle and sporadic at that. Most times one does not fully flip the prop thru the compression stroke which causes the engine to kick back and it will kick well enough to cause the Ign to fire. Now you can move the pickup and make the engine run counter rotating.

I guess the ignition units don't really care whether the magnet passes the sensor in one direction or the other, will still make spark although out of time in reverse. I think the reed valved engines and piston ported engines would run equally well in reverse except for the ingnition timing. Rotary valved engines would have a problem though making any power. I don't know how they could build in a safety devise to kill the spark in reverse. It is a safety problem if the plane is restricted from moving forward only.

I'll chime in on this question. IMHO, A 3W28 is a better made motor and will outperform and outlast every other motor mentioned in the responses. Yes, it is probably the most expensive, but as the old saying goes "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR". Plus, you get exceptional support and service from Gerhard at Aircraft International. Let the blasting begin........:D

One can't argue with quality of the 3W line. But for most normal everyday fliers an airframe either will not last long or be kept long. Therefore making a cheaper motor a better value. I don't mind the lesser priced engines because I am capable of my own repairs and maintenance. But then again I did just buy a 3K dollar Valach, go figure.

The 3W28i is not completely out of the picture for my project. It looks like it has a canted exhaust port. Some users mention using a DLE muffler on the 3W28i. Do most users use a header and cannister or is a regular muffler available for the 3W28i?

But its not $500 for the O.S. or the evo...

you can get the gt33 for under ~$350, the dle35 for ~$300.. you are talking about 50 bucks, not a 2x price increase.

IMAC781, The 3W28 does have a canted exhaust, but I cannot help you with any information regarding the DLE exhaust. Why don't you call Gerhard at Aircraft? He will be happy to help you with your muffler questions........;) Also, if you're looking for a little more oooomph than the 2.75hp of the Classic version of the 3W28, don't overlook the 3W28CS. It has 3.75hp and the shiny red cylinder won't look too shabby sticking out the bottom of the cowl.

My DLEs have been good so far. They have been dependable for me so I think they are a good value.
