RCGF 26cc beam mount engine
I am contemplating purchasing one of these engines for use in a 1.20 size sport model and would appreciate getting some feedback from anyone having first hand knowledge of them in regards to their build quality and performance. Thanks.
|
Can we get some info here? There is no stinkin' info about this engine anywhere! I think only one video on youtube...
|
It's new. I don't get why nobody is running them yet? When the beam mounted 20 came out, there was no hesitancy at all, and it's developed a pretty decent reputation since? This new engine is in basically the same case as it's weight and dimensions are the same as the 20cc engine's.
I think part of it might be that BP Hobby IS STILL showing the OLD radial mounted 26cc engine specs for the NEW engine? For pete's sake, what is it going to take them to publish the correct info? Correct info can be seen here: http://www.zjrcgf.com/ProductView.aspx?id=18953 This will be the next engine I buy. Took a temporary time out from gas to fly electric foamies (working on 3D), or I'd probably already have one. -Al |
Thanks Al. Youre always in the know and on the ball. I think im going to put one of these in my 67" goldberg edge instead of a dle20 when i rebuild it. The dle was good, but i want more vertical power.
Is the engine alone really lighter than the dle20, or is that a mistake on the specs? and where is the best place to get one? |
Nevermind, BP hobby has them for 189. Nice!
Does bowman make a piston ring for these? Never used one, but heard they are the bees knees... |
Not a fan of fixin what ain't broke, so no knowledge regarding a Bowman ring.
Best of luck with the new engine. I hope you won't be shy regarding your experience with it? Regarding weight, the 20cc RCGF is about 3 ounces heavier than the DLE? I read they were close to the same so I'd assume the 26 would be a hair heavier as well. But geez, with performance approaching that of a 30cc engine, with the weight and foot print of the 20? I think this engine is a game changer for those looking for top drawer power to weight ratios! -Al |
The rcgf site says the engine alone weighs 700g. I thought the DLE20 was 720g for some reason, but its actually 650g. BP hobbies says its 900g for just the engine. But it must be 900g with everything.
Not sure how soon I'll be able to get one running with some rpm info, but I will post about it for sure! |
just noticed that BP's site reads " We only recommend using wood or aluminum cast mounts for installing this engine into a model. We do not recommend using a polymer glass filled mount." for their 20cc beam mount engine. I wonder why that is...
|
Too much torque for the composite mount. Ask me how I know??
And the Bowman rings are a great addition to an engine. I put them in all mine right out of the box. |
Well on one hand, with nobody flying these yet, I think it's a safe bet nobody's broken a mount yet? On the other hand, I'd be looking for a sturdy one? The idea of flying an alum. one sounds like a study in vibration from where I'm sitting?
900g/32oz all up The DLE is 29oz all up |
The aluminum works great for me. One just has to make sure there is no part of the case against the mount, only the mounting rail.

I never thought the plastic mounts were adequate for the 20 gas or the larger Glo engines. Way too much flex for my taste. I have seen two of them fail in flight. There are several good quality, aluminum mounts available at reasonable prices.
|
Hows the weight comparison between mounts? I dont want any more weight than needed on the nose. It mentions wood mounts. Really?
|
I think they might be referring to a setup like a side mounted engine on a profile?
|
I have a Hyde vibration mount on a RCGF 15. Its expensive but it works. You might want to check with Mr. Hyde because his mount is plastic.

Truckracer, what size were the mounts being used, and what engines were mounted on them? Thanks! |

Do the rings add more power from better compression, or just last longer? Ill have to see if they make them for the 26ccBM.

Thanks![/QUOTE] Don't remember the engines for sure but they were the standard plastic "T" mounts you see provided with many of the Chinese engines. They were marketed for 120 and similar sized Glo engines before that. I've used the Great Planes 2-piece plastic mounts with good results but even these seem too flexible for my preferences. These seem stronger than the "T" mounts. Frankly, I don't care what others use, just stating my preferences which lean towards aluminum. |

the pictures below. When these beam mounts, engine and fire wall are bolted together they form strong no-flex unit. I've used them for many years and have never seen a failure. Also, they can be drilled, tapped and used without nuts if you prefer. I have a certain degree of confidence in a good FRP set of them as well. I did run across a set of aluminum ones though, that might be worth a try if you were so inclined? 10 bucks! The guys talking about it say the DLE RA will fit, so this engine should be a breeze? So you can suit yourself?

well I got paid today and went on to order the engine and just as I had feared, ITS OUT OF STOCK NOW! Im so freakin mad! I want to get this plane flying and really want to see how the 26cc pulled it. I may get antcy and use the DLE20 for the time being, but I dont want to because Im sure the cowl will need to be cut and mounted differently.....
|
for the mounts, I too have some confidence in the poly mounts. Ive crashed a few nose first and none of them broke. One was an emergency landing (when my wing slid out of the anti rotation pin holes) and landed in the weeds on its belly. When the prop hit the dirt/weeds it broke the engine box off the plane. Engine mounts were fine...

Ive been searching but i cant find anyone else besides BP hobbies who carries these in the US. quite a few places sell RCGF, but not the 26cc BM.
Anyone know anywhere else I can get my hands on one in the states or maybe even Canada? Ive found some in Europe and Australia, but with shipping costs and time, that probably wont be any good. Thanks, Jeremy |
