C&H ignitions

I have several engines with different versions of C&H ignitions. How can I tell which have auto advance timing and which do not. I have a brand new Quadra 100 with the C&H ignition, no manual advance, and it really kicks back trying to start it which makes me think the ignition does not have the auto advance.

If it is kicking back, either the timing is not set correctly or it doesn't have auto advance

My experience with those is if you flip them fast enough, the kick back don't happen. If you baby them around, you will get kicked.

If we're talking about the older ignitions, all the ones I have owned that had the advance curve built in were engraved "SS" for SynchroSpark on the covers.

Timing is OK so that was why I wanted to know if the ignitions were marked in any way. On a Quadra 100 you don't want to be getting your knuckles rapped too often!

Easy way to tell is the mechanical advance ignitions are housed in a brown cover box. The auto advance came with a silver cover.

OOPS! The mechanical advance was available in both colors. Dan.

This is the way mine are

mine are marked with ss in all colors , You can take the cover off and see if the extra bord is in it if it is the brown one or can get an ad on advance module

Thanks for all your replies, I have determined that the ignition does not have SS. I am going to replace it with an RCExcel unit to save the hassle, ( and to save my fingers!:D)

Right Dan,The Syncro Spark module could in either cas brown or silver. If it has a timing module, should have a Syncro Spark sticker on back of case.Only sure way is to remove the case cover and see if there are two circuit boards .The larger high voltage board and smaller circuit in back of high voltage coil.Don't lose insulater card between case and HV board.

Yes that is correct, even with the timing control you don't want to crank them whimpy or you can get whacked.
