is their a difference in DLE single ignition modules?
I have a DLE 20 RA and a couple DLE 35 RA's The ignition box in the 20 is very unreiable. It is currently out of stock at tower,
I wonder if the DLE 35 Ignition module was the same one. I do know they have the same connector at the plug. Any help here would be appreciated. |
You have it. Spark plug boots the only difference.

The 35 ignition will work fine on the 20.

The 20 RA and 35RA ignitions are the same, even the angled boot.
I just looked at the module for a new 35RA, and the stickers says for use on 20RA and 35RA. Pete |
Book and some guys say .019" BUT - many have found running them at .025"-.026" will help clean up a "burbly" rich mid range. For whatever reason, the wider gap lets the engine run cleaner, and there's no downside to the wider gap.

I just picked up an ignition module from Tower for my DKE30 and printed on it is: For DLE 30 ONLY! Anyone have a guess why?

Could be they're going back to the original DLE engines as well, when they were first introduced. I forget the module numbers, but originally the DLE 20 and 30 both had modules with a single "step" for the timing curve. The infamous DLE 20 module "step" was so low it caused a lot of tuning headaches until DLE finally admitted to the issue. That info in hand, guys could tune around it. The DLE 30 had a similar step, but it was high enough where few noticed it. The rest of the singles, and the singles since, have all used the same curve. If your new module is rated for 8.4 volts you have the newer style and that add copy is a non event. Even if it's the original module rated for 6v. it's still no big deal. Run it! |
No, I don't think Tower is to blame on this one.....the 'Warning' was printed on the module itself....oh, and yes I have used it - no 'step' problems with this one!

For several years the DLE ignitions have come with a tag stating the engine they were supposed to be used with. I was told by a reliable source the various ignitions had slightly different advance curves and of course there was the horrible A-01 #4 that came with early 20 that had the problem causing quick step curve. Other than cap configurations, I have interchanged the various ignitions with no noticable performance differences. The exception being the early A-01 #4 that is pretty worthless for some applications. Later A-02 #4 ignitions seem to have a normal curve. So there may be differences in the various ignitions but I can't detect them.
On a different note, I've grown to like the performance of the RCXP / RCAME ignitions sold by Milton at RC Extreme Power. These have a bit quicker advance curve along with a hotter spark that produces a quicker responding engine. |
Is nothing but a sales tactic, Just to make people who do not know pay extra for a ignition that any RCexl or RCXP will work

I was told to gap the plug with an exacto blade. It's served me well.
