help me select an engine for a new project
:D Bruce Tharp is supplying me with a Super Flying King modified with twin nacelles for a twin-engined version of his plane. It is 132" WS by 95" long, 32-36 pounds as a single with a requirement for a single 50cc - 80cc powerplant. He thinks twin Fuji 50ccs
are too much. What about twin Zenoah G-38s, as they seem to be popular on Ziroli twin-engined planes? 3W24s too much? Cost is not a consideration. The SFK can be viewed on his website, www.btemodels.com. Am planning on using plane to tow gliders and as a video based camera plane. Your opinions please! Reg Mason |
RE: help me select an engine for a new project
Hello Reg Mason
I am going to help you. 1: Your plane is a trainer then you can fly this plane perfectly with a small engine. 2:If you use 2 FUJI 50c.c your plane flys with a 100c.c too much power ! 3:Your plane needs a 80 c.c max power ! 4: The 2 FUJI 50c.c are (5.2hp + 5.2hp= 10.4hp ! ) very strong... 5: The 2 ZENOAH 38c.c are (2.6hp + 2,6hp=5.2hp ! ) very good... 6: If you install 2 ZENOAH38 you would fly this trainer twice more of time !!! good. 7: The most pilot which they use more than one engine prefer ZENOAH RELIABILITY ! 8: Your plane can fly with 2 small engine ZENOAH 26 ! but I advise you take 2 ZENOAH38 with a big fuel tank. You can install the video camera without problem. Do not worry about the weight ! 9:The worst you can do is take 2 engines 3W24 ! I know they are very power and consume very much ! 10: THis engines runs with electronic ignition connected to a battery 4.8 v. You only can fly your plane 5-6 flights of 10 minutes each one! 10 : Take the best of world small engines for aircraft ,magneto ignition ZENOAH. Thanks. |
RE: help me select an engine for a new project
I think Ika pretty much nailed that one. . G-38, or even a G-45, on magneto, is a very hard engine to beat for this airframe.
good luck with it. |
RE: help me select an engine for a new project
May I suggest the GCBM R/C 25cc conversion engine. 2.4 horsepower, swings a 16X8 @ 8,600 rpm, 18X8 @ 7,200 rpm, super reliable Homelite core engine, magneto flywheel, slightly lighter than the 38's, and much lighter on the wallet @ $210.00 a pop.

RE: help me select an engine for a new project
I watched Bruce fly his demo SFK at the Castle, CA IMAA meet. What a sweet plane!!
If it was my project, I too, would go with the G-38s' and forget about everything else. Keep It Simple. |
RE: help me select an engine for a new project
I would use the g-45s,you could tow anything at not much weight penalty compared to the 38.
