What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

Can anyone tell me what is the lightest gas engine made that would fit on a 1.20 ARF EDGE around 9 1/2 pds. I've looked at a bunch but I need someone who has experience to give me some anwsers.

I used the RCS 140 on a Hanger 9 edge, but it was about 12-1/2 lbs. Flew great but not unlimited.

It is not out YET (hopefully in the next 2 months), but the new BME55XTreme is supposed to weigh the same as an OS 1.60.....2 pounds!!!

The ultimate engine: SM 30 http://www.modellexclusiv.de/SM_Motoren/SM30/sm30.html
This is the lightest and most powerful engine in its class.
My engine on the test bench: Menz 18x8 8600Rpm.
My engine is brand new and I will use it for my Funtana Pro.
In Germany this is a very populair engine.

It looks like a nice engine, but it is fairly heavy for only being a 30cc engine......2.53 pounds bare

Hi CAPtain232,
You find 1145 gr, ignition included, three bearings on the crankschaft, fairly heavy for a 30cc engine?

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

considering you would get better performance from the OS 160 plus it is a lighter package
OR
a SAITO 180 would be nearly the same power and weigh almost 1 FULL pound less

...then yes I think it is heavy

I think there are better performance choices out there than this little gas engine

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

A BME 55 extreme is way too powerful for a 9 1/2 ship. It is more suited for something like 12 or 13 pounds for extreme aerobatics.

O sorry, I thougt this discussion was about a 1.20 gas engine replacement???
My engine is more powerful then a Saito180, way much!!!
It revs 400 rpm more than a friends OS160.

The Hangar9 Edge is going to weigh nearly 12 pounds or more when completed.........The 9 1/2 pounds has to be the empty airframe

Didier..
You are correct this discussion is about a GAS ENGINE replacement for a 1.20 size plane. The reason I made the comments I did is because I know from first hand experience that these Hangar 9 1.20 size planes end up heavy with a gas engine. Therefore if you are going to use a gas engine, something like the ZDZ40 would be a bare minimum. An even better match is any gas engine that weighs less than the ZDZ and has more displacement. Unfortunately, there are none in existance RIGHT NOW.....The BME 55XT is soon to be out which really fits the bill.

From your posted numbers, the 30cc engine doesn't seem to be so much stronger than the SAITO 180 as it will turn an APC 18x6 prop at 8700rpm on 20% or 9200rpm on 30% Nitro. Then if you check the numbers posted by many in the TACH forum, you will see that the OS 160 TYPICALLY is the same as well.......So as far as performance goes, I just do not see how this is a good LIGHT WEIGHT option....

How long have we been hearing that one?

This SM30 engine is only designed to run for 30 hours before rebuild, according to the manufacturer.

Didier,

What brand and size prop are you running On your SM30?

Are you getting over 8200 rpm on a 18X8 APC? Or 9200 on a 18X6 APC? That is what I get on a OS 160 FX.

OUCH RYAN,

you have me there though......I can answer the question......1 year and 2 months....that's when I placed my order. New rumor on it is this JAN or FEB........I have had to go to the doctor and get my fingers surgically UNCROSSED :D

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

I get 8600RPm with a MenzS 18x8.
My engine at the moment has 1 gallon through it.
I have also tried a MenzS 20x6 with 1/2 gallon of fuel and the RPM numbers were 7400.
I think this is the prop I will use when the engine is runng in comopletely.
Normally the MenzS props has lower RPM numbers then APC.

HAS ANYONE CONSIDERED THE MVVS 1.6 OR 2.15 GASOLINE ENGINES. THERE IS A LOT POSTED ON THIS BB AND THE NEW VERSION APPEARS TO BE A GOOD ENGINE. I DO NOT HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH GAS I AM NEW TO IT MYSELF.

GOOD LUCK

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

Thanks everyone,
Since I posted this yesterday I see that I've arroused questions, this plane is the Creek Hobbies Edge 73" with 970" wing area. I had a Fuji 32A on this plane and it just seemed to heavy around 14 1/4 to 14 1/2 pds. it would fly but it was just to close to the edge of disaster. I sold the Fuji and now I'm between the decision of buying a Satio 1.80 which will drink glow fuel like crazy or a smaller gas engine that sips fuel.
I've seen where a few people have used ZDZ 40's but that seems like I'm getting back to close to the weight I had before, so I'm wanting the lightest weight gasser I can find. I weight the plane now without the motor/alumium spinner/spinner adapter/ master airscrew prop and Fuji motor mount and I'm coming up with a 9 1/2 to 10 pd. plane. This is with the servos, servo extensions, gas tank, reciever w/ protective box, wheels, cowl and pilot everything minus the motor, spinner and prop at 9 1/2 to 10 pds. I really want to do gas so all info. is needed.

From what I have read the FPE 2.4 is very light for its size. You might want to look into its specs.

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

Greetings:
I own two GSP Sukhois. One with an OS 1.20 Surpass, which just flies the plane less-than-scale-like and needed almost a half pound of led in nose. The second has the MVVS 1.60 gas. This one has not flown, but requires no led, and weighs in at approximately 11.60 pounds.
The thrust on the 1.6 gasser is (on the ground anywho) surpasses that of my OS 120, so I think this with a larger prop will make for a fantastic flyer. Haven't had time lately with new job to fly, but will get back with ya when it happens. Hope my two-cents helps.

With a RCS 140 you will wind up at 12 - 12.5 lbs. My 140 would turn a 17-8 APC at better than 9000 in the air when it was well broken in.

Dirtybird,

Just curious, how are you measuring your engines rpm while in the air.....as in flying?

What do you mean by that?
I don't see it on the web site!

RE: What is the lightest gas engine for 1.20 ARF.

Didier,

I have just reread the email the manufacturer sent me and will post a portion here.

"8400rpm is with "normal" silencer. With reso-system you reach more than 8600rpm. But the engine is constructed for 7500rpm standard run by 100 hours. But I fly a SM30 with more than 10000rpm in a DagoRed Pylon longer than 30 hours until today without problems."

The prop they recommend is a Mejzlik 18X8 at 8400 rpm, less load than apc 18x8.

So my last post was incorrect.

These engines are not cheap however at 549.00 euro plus 26.00 shipping=$677.47.

Didier,

How did you mount the engine to your test stand? The carb is right in line with two of the mounting holes. Can you take photos?

I have the Creek Katana with a 3W24 swinging a 20x6 at 7700 rpm. It still took 10 ozs. of lead in the nose to balance. It wieghs about 13 lbs. I will be redoing it over the winter so I can hopefully drop as much wieght as possible. It flies great and does 3D okay, but the lighter the better.

Hank
