Looking for Engine for Plane Help?
 

I have a World Models Patty Wagstaff Extra 300 im wanting to get a good engine for it.
Im looking into Fuji , 3W, or a zdz.

Im looking into a Fuji 64 its
Weight w/muffler: 5.7 Lb
Output: 5.7 HP @ 9000 rpm
every one knows you cant reach that rpm with a gas engine looking more like 7500 rpm.
im am considering a 3W 75
weight with/0 muff. 4.75 lb.
7.5 HP
which i know its a lot of power but its weight is around the same.
I don't want a DA 50 they are to expensive for what they are. And the zenoah 62 are to heavy for the power they give off I know the Fuji is about there as well but there a better engine then the zenoah. Can someone help me with there opinion about your experience with this plane. thanks.

I read someone put a 3W48 B2 , and trying to find out how that worked out on a pending email to that person.

I'll go along with Geistware on this one. Any gasser bigger than a 50 will be too heavy for this plane to show it's best qualities. If I were making the choice right now it would be the new ZDZ 50 NG. Good luck with your Wagstaff Extra. [8D][8D]

That plane works very well with a BME 50.
Any other 50 will be fine also. Keep your engine choice as light as possible if you really want unlimited performance out of it.

dont have any experience with your plane, but i do have a 3W 48 twin on my midwest cap 232. the plane ready to fly with no gas in the tank is about 18.5 lbs. i have a Mejzlik 23x10 on it. it rpms at about 6200. the engines is rated at 5 horse. flies well, i have no complaints.

A guy in my club has a 3w-48 B2 in a GreatPlanes Patty Wag. Had to cut a little of the cowl for the plug caps.[:'(] His opinion was it was too much power. He flys mostly at 1/3 throttle, and until the engine broke-in and the idle settled down, he had to kill the engine at touchdown, or he'd be out of (paved) runway. But then again, he has a huge grin on his face when he pulls up to a near vertical, rolling climbout after a 25-30 foot rollout on take off!

Brison 3.2, DA-50, or ZDZ-50.
I think the Brison is a little less $, power and weight is about the same on all 3.

I have not run one, but I have heard that the Fuji engines make good boat anchors, but not much else. The G62 is a great engine and they last forever, but it is too heavy and too much engine for this model. Go with a good 50. There are plenty of good used ones out there for reasonable prices. ZDZ, BME and Brison all make good light engines. I would recommend a DA, but you will never find one cheap. Keep the wieght down on that aircraft if you want good flying performance. A few ounces DO matter.

What in the world do you mean, the DA50R is to expensive for what it is? You can get it shipped to you with the standard inverted side Pitts muffler for $600.00, and it will swing a 24x8 at 7k after run in. If you really want to go there, ALL the purpose built engines are to dang expensive for what they are, but the market will pay the price, so end of discussion. If you figure the plane is going to weigh 16 lbs or less, the DA50R is perfect. I have one of the new mvvs58i in my WildHare 28%Edge540T and it is balistic, but that engine would also be "To little for to much" I guess.

Joka, lighter is always better when it comes to the "Engine compartment". My recommendations would be (in order):

BME55 (when available)
BME50
DA50
ZDZ50
BME44
ZDZ40
go glow

Most of your Sachs/Husky based engines, especially the industrial-based ones with minimum modification or lightening, will come out a LOT heavier than any of these engines, and make substantially less power. Any engine that adds more than 3.25-3.5 pounds TOTAL weight (muffler and ignition included), unless it makes a substantial amount more power than the above listed engines, will only degrade total performance. It may make it fly fast, but it will then be a very fast flying brick.
