Something wrong with BME Engines?
 

I'm building a 100cc class airplane and want to use a twin. I would use a FPE 5.8 (I have one know) but I'd like a twin. If you look at the specs the BME 105 or the new 110 blow the competition away. I don't want a rear carb engine so ZDZ is out. People at my flying field have DA's but my opinion is they suffer from the " I want to be like Mike syndrome":eek: . So why is the BME not more popular?

You may want to look at the Brison 6.4, we have one on a comp.arf 33% and are very!!! happy with the performance, response, smoothness and power.

The BME (98, 100, 102, 105) twins used to be based on industrial cylinders and pistons adapted to their crankcase. They were the lightest engines for their size. They were not the most powerful engines - DA and 3W were stronger. They also had some issues with very slow service work (+6 months to get an engine repaired).

They have just recently released the BME-110 which is based on their own design of cylinders and pistons. The few that have them say they are as strong as a 3W-106. If BME improves their service turnaround time, and keeps their price competitive with DA and 3W, and the motors prove to be reliable, then they will become more popular.

Diablo - How can BME have just released their 110? I ordered one last year November - I am early on the waiting list - and I am still waiting 13 months later. The BME is still on order, but I bought a DA at Toledo last year, and never mind that the BME specs are better than the DA specs, the DA I had sure outperfomed that BME I am still waiting for.

Some have posted that Chief has the BME-110 in stock.
Keith also has the BME-110 available without the ignition.
I wasn't on his list, but he said he could sell me one without ignition a few weeks ago.
He is shipping engines. You'd have to talk to him to find out when you will get yours if you are on the list.

I bought a used 3W-106 instead of the BME. I like 6 bolt hubs and I already have a spare ignition, spinner, mufflers, and props for the 3W. I've had good luck with a pair of older 3W-100 motors. I hope the 106 proves equally reliable.

I've got a brand new one just sitting here with the ignition and BME mufflers...

My hangar changes faster than I can get 'em built..

The ONLY source for the BME110 is straight from BME at the moment, and they are producing 12-15 per week. Those of us who have them KNOW they are at least as strong as the 3W106, if not stronger, and also 2 lbs lighter. I've already seen THREE 110's being sold in the marketplace or on the mailing lists, so there must be more than 10-15 of them out there by now. :)

Ignitions have not been an issue in at least 2 months, Diablo. All engines are shipped with ignitions now.

Seems that if Hobbsy is going to keep editing out offers from people to sell an Xtreme110 to rcpilot100, he could at LEAST remove rcpilots disparaging remarks about the BME110. After all, we can't say how badly we are trying to sell the guy a motor, stands to reason he should not be able to say how badly he can't get one no matter how many people are trying to basically GIVE him one at cost.

Maybe now this thread will get closed. But only after I make a copy of everything in it. :D

Who said bme is an unpopular engine. I have owned 3, and several others I know own or have owned bme engines. I only know of 2 people in my area that have DA, maybe it's just a regional thing in your area. They are every bit as competetive as any other light weight gasser, BME just doesnt throw motors out for free to the top flyers, DA is a great motor but for the vast majority of applications a 33-35% plane with a 100 in it is so overpowered it doesnt really matter which one it is IMO, it's all about what I bought must be best because I bought it

Per RCU rules all engines for sale must go in the marketplace. It is free to list now so there is no excuse. Gas engines sell extremely fast in our marketplace. I think more than 3/4 of those listed are sold at any given time.

Then, in keeping with the SPIRIT of RCU Admin's suggestion, I suggest that RCpilot100 vent his frustrations about not having a BME110 on the "classified" section of RCU. Doing it in the forums section is a patently frustrating way to achieve one's goal of procurring the finest "110cc class" engine on the market today.

You must FOCUS on the buying of this engine Rcpilot100-san. . . Search, and you shall BUY!

So nobody can post anything bad to say about BME (or any maker for that matter)? C'mon. Give us a break. There is no need to be so militant about it. I'd like to feel that I am free to express my opinions - good or bad - without being jumped on by some "brand-loyal" zealots.

Expressing opinions and offering something for sale are two very different things.

In reality, nothing bad was said about BME, but the same people doing the whining have usually created the problem themselves, in this case the point being that although someone had several offers to sell him the engine he desired, instead of buying the engine he keeps complaining about not being able to get one.

Very few accurate descriptions of problems with a BRAND of engine get posted. Most complaints could easily be solved by calling the manufacturer or using the product properly in the first place. There are, however, on-going problems inherint to some engines or manufacturers. BME and DA are not among these manufacturers, and probably have the least amount of complaints of any engines on the market.

I, and most other people, welcome accurate and intelligent discussions about problems with ANY engine on the market, and can discuss most of their foibles, idiosyncracies, or strong points if asked, and do so in an intelligent manner. Perhaps, Volfy, you should read, closely, the posts in this thread, and see just why certain things were said in response to provocative mis-statements by others. As well, it would have helped, immensly, if some things had not been censored by a moderator. That those statements are missing, and even disallowed due to overzealous "policing" in these forums, means you will never see what was really said. Perhaps what was censored would have stopped the entire discourse from continuing. Now we'll never know.
