Taurus engines

Anyone know the status of Taurus engines?

Bill told me the web site was down temporarily but, that was almost 2 months ago and it's still down.

Would appreciate an update from anyone in the know.

I spoke with Bill tonight and their website will be down while they are "reorganizing". I wanted to place an engine order but Bill asked that I call back in a month. Pete

OK, sounds interesting.
What is going on?

Sounds like there may be trouble in paradise. I hope not.

I had the impression that this is a short term issue and Bill welcomed my order in a month. I did not ask for details. Pete

I am not sure but last time I spoke with Bill he mentioned one of their people had serious health problems. It could be they have had to do some reorganizing. I am just guessing based on our conversation about a month ago[:o]

What's the latest on Taurus engines?

Had not spoken to Bill since early summer. Was he able to get things reorganized and start production again?

I have a Giant Stinger kit I'd like to build this winter looking for an engine.

Bill is alive and well and back in production. I crashed my TS52 hard and he repaired it for a price that was more than reasonable. He told me he had the first batch of engines available for sale (this was over a month ago). He was talking about a new TS52 with even more power.

Give him a call, you might be pleasantly surprised!

Ric,
Glad to hear it. Was he able to get a website up and running?

:D As stomper has indicated. The TS 42 and TS 52 engines will be shipping in December 04. TS 62 and TS 69 around Dec.15th. They are still doing repairs in the meantime. It is hoped the web site will be up around the same time engines, Amsoil, props, tanks, etc. According to Taurus they are very appreciative of the consideration that has been bestowed on them during a very painful period. And hope that the new engineering of the engines will show that Taurus Engines is back and better than ever. They will be at Toledo April 1,2,3 2005,probably right next to Lanier like last year.Passed on
from Taurus Engines/Southgate Aero Inc., thank you for your support and patience and wishing all a happy holiday season.

Excaliber, can you tell me the weight and HP of the TS-42 and the TS-52 please

thank you

excaliber 11-24-2004 11:45 PM

RE: Taurus engines

TS 42 3lbs 3oz with everything except muffler TS 52 3lbs 5oz same as 42
HP is a magic pencil.
this I do know the 42 will run 20x10 at 7plus and the 52 will run a 24x8 at 7k
I saw a 52 out fly a G62 in identical planes and weights Giant Aeromaster @ 20lbs
I'm sure there are other guys out there that can shed more light on performance.
Why not use the email address posted in a previous post. When in doubt go direct.Remember not all props perform the same.

RE: Taurus engines

The HP is a majic pencil? what does that mean? what is the HP of the 42 and the 52? If the 52 is only 3 pounds and 5 OZ, I'd say thats a good replacment for the DA 50 which a lot of guys are having trouble with.
(Rods and Bearings) Heck, depending on the HP of the 42, it might even give the DA 50 a run for it's money

luv2flyrc 11-25-2004 07:04 AM

RE: Taurus engines

What he means is that the HP rating is a completely useless way to compare engines, it is of no value.

Eg, some little glow engines are rated at very high HP, like the Rossi 1.05 ducted fan engine, 5 or 6 hp if I remember right.

there's no way you're gonna hang a 22x10 on the Rossi and spin 6500-7000 like u would with a 5hp DA 50.

Bottom line is don't expect an engine rated at 5.2 hp to necessarily out perform one rated at 4.8 hp. ( just an eg.) U need to make rpm comparisons with the same prop.

I own both and they are both excellent engines. The DA has a bit more power and has a little less bulk. The TS 52 with the side mount carb takes up more space but is a lot smoother-- best comparison is that it runs like a 40 size glow engine swinging a 22 inch prop. The TS 42 I had on my Wagstaff would swing a NX 21/10 @ 7100 RPM at sea level. That is G62 power from a 2.4 engine. The TS 52 did not have much more power, but it is techianally still in the break in stage. They are excellent engines!

RE: Taurus engines

:)JRJohn, tell you what, I have one of each. and I just got some new props. Since I have time this weekend I'll run each of mine and post the results here for all to read.
From M.A.S.H I believe Col. Potter HP= horse puckey, he he he
An example, The Zenoah manual says the HP range is 8,000/10,000. So if it says the engine has 3.0hp and you are only turning 7,000 you are not getting the ponies.
Now if you run 8,000 or better chances are your prop will be ripping which is a sign of an ineffecient condition another power loss.
Unless a manufacturer uses a dyno to rate their product then HP is so much ink on paper. hp=Ft./lbs/min (ft#/m) multiplyed by 33,000
or hp= torque in inches xRPM divided by 63,026
let you know later

RE: Taurus engines

I'd like to know the RPMs of the TS 42 with a 24x8 and a 22x10 Menz if possible. I'm thinking of hanging this engine on a 87" Extreme Flight Yak. I know they arn't out yet, but they will be soon. I think the plane will come in around 16 to 16 1/2 pounds. Do you think the TS 42 would be a good choice?

jrjohn 11-26-2004 02:13 PM

RE: Taurus engines

One more question. Are the TS 42 and the 52 identical except for the cyllinder and piston? What I'm wondering is if a guy had a 42, could he buy a 52 cylinder/piston and just slap it on?

Does the TS-52 have as much power as the DA 50?

I'm working with Bill getting the Taurus Engines website up & running. It shouldn't be long. Bill asked me to post the attached image concerning the status of Taurus Engines saying "we're back!".

RE: Taurus engines

jrjohn, I'll try to get the numbers this weekend. don't have a 22x10 menz.
I do have 22x8 Bolly,22x8zinger pro, 22x10PK max,22x10zinger std, 22x10 MSC.take your pick
for a 24x8 I have 24x8menz, 24x8 top flight P/P and a 23x10 PKmax.
Bolly,PKmax and the MSC are real chunks of wood, I don't run carbon fiber or any composite props. course no matter what I get rpm wise I'm sure it won't be quite good enough for some.
I will be using a TNC tachometer and 50/1 fuel.

Tune in later

luvtiflyrc, curious what prop you used on the DA 50 to get 5hp and 6500-7000.
a test in fall High Flight lists the following with aprox. 45 min. run time on a new engine at 32/1 fuel mix. I will grant you the R's should increase in time and a change of fuel mix.
menz 22x8 6790 wood
"""""" 24x10 6450 wood
"""" 24x8 6310 wood

RE: Taurus engines

Ex,

I wasn't quoting actual #'s , just making a point that u can't use HP to compare engines. I think DA lists the 50cc at 5hp but, they don't quote the rpm.

U could expect any strong 50cc engine to turn a 22x10 6500=7000rpm. Of course this depends on the prop itself eg. there's a big diff between a Menz S 22x10 , MSC 22x10 and Mejzlik 22x10.

The other huge factor with a 2 stroke engine is the exhaust set up. That alone can vary rpm by as much as 1K

Mike

RE: Taurus engines

luv2flyrc, thank you for the answer on the DA 50, you are correct on the props and exhaust. Most modelers do not take that into consideration which they should.
Other factors that can play a part in performance is the location geographically.
Fuels are blended differently for different seasons and altitudes as well which will have an affect no matter how small.
