3W 100QS or ZDZ 120 for 35%'er
 

What would be the best choice for IMAC and 3d performance between a ZDZ 120 and a 3W 100QS for a 35% DR-109. I have never run either engine and would appreciate any help.

Propstrike- the 35% DR109: who's kit is it? Is it a Genovese 109? Reason for asking is that particular plane is extremely lightweight and I would suggest looking at at lighter engine. If looking at ZDZ I would recommend the new ZDZ100NG. In fact, I'd recommend this over the 120 in any case.

Well, probably going to get plasted, but if you want dead reliable and easy tuning, DA100.

I will probably get blasted but why not use 1000 turns of Pirelli?
FWIW- we see the new ZDZ100ZG and the DA100 side by side all the time - the starting/reliability / power etc., are for all practical purposes the same.
Even in 20 degree weather - a few priming flips on the NG and the engine fires.
Brian has his choke on a servo -so as so as it fires on choke -he switches the ckoke to off and it is running.
To be honest - these two brands are by far the most popular here.
Also -in 99% of the trouble cases of any engines I see - the operator is the problem.
We saw a couple of other brands simply split apart in the air but all in all the new gassers-at least here - are very reliable -easy to start.

Between the two engines listed, ZDZ120 and QS 3W100, the 3W is a better engine, but both are too heavy for that airframe. If it's the GB 35% DR109, it's designed specifically around the BME 102/105 or 110 engines, and it's lightweight airframe will definitely take advantage of the BME's lighter weight. The plane is a rocket with a BME102/105 on the nose (ballistic with a 110!!!), and anything stronger is just going to be even more ballistic. But, remember, the more nose weight the worse the plane is going to fly, so try to go with a lightweight powerplant. The ZDZ100 (2nd design) is proving to be a decent powerplant, from all accounts, and is about equivalent to a BME 102/105 in power and weight, so from a strictly pragmatic viewpoint, it would be the logical next engine to bolt on the front. After that would come the DA100, the ZDZ80 single, then the 3W/QS100 or 106, and the ZDZ120 last. Remember the ZDZ120 weighs 8 POUNDS with standard exhaust diverters (I have one on the shelf . I know), and it's performance is no better than the 100-110 cc engine listed (at a 1.5-4 lbs weight penalty)

You're making sense....:D
I know Dave Genovese has put together a DR-109 with a ZDZ-80....he told me it's a rocket. That makes perfect sense at less than 23 lbs. Any lightweight motor that can spin a Menz-S 26x10 in the mid 6's rpm should do fine. If it spins harder....even better.

Yup, the ZDZ80 is a good motor for the plane, IF you keep it LIGHT.

I'll stick with the BME's though. Every other brand I've ever used had issues of some sort, but my BME's have never let me down. I like them so much I just ordered another Xtreme to replace my 3W150 on my other 40% Composite-Arf 40% 330sx. Know anyone who wants a massaged and "perfected" 3w150TOC ? :D 6300+ with a Menz 32-10.

I assume that 6300 rpm is on tuned cans? Is this one of the new lighter 150s?
My buddy Lew has a heap strong TOC-140 - on in-cowl mufflers it out turns a DA-150 by 300+ rpm.

You assume correctly. My TOC140 consistently out-turned the DA150 as well. . kinda makes you wonder.

Yes. its the new lighter one. I did a review of this particular engine in the IMAC Newsletter about 18 months ago when the new engines first came out. It has a DA carb block, and is stone cold reliable.
