First Place 1.3
I just picked one of these engines up and the ignition system looks kind of lacking, first off there is no plug boot, just a metal clip to crimp around the plug. this looks like trouble from the start. Anyone run one of these in a plane? Did you have any trouble with radio interference?

RE: First Place 1.3
Sounds like you have a Reichmuth ignition...There should be a rubber boot over the metal clip, maybe it was taken off somewhere along the line..If the engine is new call SIG and have them send you one...A small engine shop will have some also...The plug should be a resistor type, with an "R" in the number...If you keep the wires short and all the ignition components as far forward in the plane as possible it should be OK, but do a good range check first...
the rubber boot doesn't HAVE to be there, but it helps keep the wire on the plug.. |
RE: First Place 1.3
I have a FPE 2.4, with the Reichmuth ignition. It has no boot on the plug connector, and I have never had a problem in 2+ years of use. Never considered it should have one, although, all my other ignitions do. Maybe I should look into it as well. Post you findings from FPE or SIG.

RC ignition, If I have trouble with this ignition system would you be able to work something up for this engine if I send it in?

RE: First Place 1.3
Yes, no problem :D

RE: First Place 1.3
You betcha, by golly. Undo the radiator cap and drive a GOOD ignition under it.:)
As long as the clip stays on there shouldn't be problems, but the rubber cap adds grip and makes it even more unlikely to have problems with a lose connector. The Bosch metal cap sticks even better and provides more RFI protection than just a resistor spark plug |
RE: First Place 1.3
Any word on how this motor is performing for you guys?
