How to kill an engine ?
 

What is the best way to shut down an engine ? I know of two methods but don't know which is best.

One can simply use throttle cut.
One can turn the ignition switch off.

Are there any other or better ways to shut an engine off so it does not flood or run too dry so the engine is harder to start on the following start.

I usually use throttle cut when on the ground. But I also have an ignition cut on the Tx in case of emergency's.
No other ways to stop one unless you go to the throw your hand, foot, rag, stick in the prop OR just pick the plane up by the tail and let the prop hit the ground. [>:]

All kidding aside. If you can, rig your plane with both.

either - do the shut off from an idle setting.
If the carb is correctly adjusted and all is in good repair - restarts should be a flip -or two.
IF the engine was very warm when shut off - restart may require choking again as the carb simply boils off the gas .
IF the idle needle (low speed fuel needle ) is too lean -restarts will be difficult.
Most gassers - when properly set - will instantly restart from a normal temp run - after say - 10 minutes.
The initial engine runup may hesitate slightly till temp reaches operating levels.
We have checked this on our ownengines as well as many other setups done by competition flyers - at TOC etc..
Never throw a rag in the prop.
I remember a fool who demonstrated this technique years back as his clever method.

My Brison 3.2 (About 1.5 gallons old) doesn't stop even when the throttle is closed all the way. Could the low-speed needle setting be too high ???

Yes. You could take out the idle speed screw altogether.

The idle STOP screw --(mechanical adj- not fuel adj--)

Idle speed screw doesn't control the mixture. Just two different names for the same thing. So we're both right:D

So you are saying that I should take the "idle stop screw" out.

Actually, even the idle is very high. I am getting around 3K on a Mejlick 21x10 prop. Full throttle 7260 RPM :D

Yes. Should idle down to 2000 RPM or a couple of hundred RPM either way on mag ign. Or around 1200 on bat ign. If you use Futaba trans. program the trainer switch for idle cut.

This can spark a heated debate - but I perfer to cut the ignition power.

My switch failed ON the last time I flew...thanks to throttle cut still able to stop it.

My Brison 2.4 will not shut off by the throttle because of a knotch designed into the butterfly (i don't know why). I just ordered an optic fiber kill switch from[link]http://www.electrodynam.com[/link] looks like the cat's _ _ _.

I wish somebody made a kill switch that would know that the throttel trim is completely down and then kill the engine. Could use a y adapter from the throttle channel to do this. I am out of channels on my 8103, so I would have to buy a Matchbox to make a channel avaiable for a kill switch.

My kill switch will use my last channel and I have to put Y's on ail. & flaps to get that.

I have my throttle set to kill the engine when the trim is pulled down. I also have a choke servo installed that kills the engine quickly too.;)

Don,

it's a good switch - no doubt. I've been using mine for a year now....

I also have a "Hard Switch" in series so I can always kill the motor even if it fails. I could also kill the motor with throttle trim if I really wanted to, no choke servo though - don't care to carry around all of the extra weight....
