balancing props?

I have a 22x10 apc prop for my g 62. Now balancing this thing seems impossible. I took two old cds and used them as the saddles for my prop balancer. I have a samll magnetic balancer but the prop is to heavy for it, so i used the balancing shaft and the cds to make a balancer.

Heres the problem. i have the prop so it seems balanced as the blades sit level, but when i turn eith one of the blades down toward the floor the blade closest to the floor continues to move down and rest on the stand. eith sie does it. The prop will not balance in any position either. I tried adding weight to each side of the hub and i still cant get it right.

Is there a trick to this or am i overdoing the balancing? Is it ok when the blades sit level with the prop flipped either way?

It sounds like the hub balance is off. If you have the blades balanced it should set level with the blades horizontal. Once you get it to this point set the prop verticle. Im using a DuBro balancer which allows any size prop to rotate. The heavy side of the hub will always go to the bottom and the prop will go back to horizontal. You will have to add weight to the top side of the hub. On wooden props I drill small holes in the light side and add lead shot to the holes with thin CA. It gets tedious but if you mess with it you can get it perfect. The picture shows an old prop that was way off and required a bunch of balast weight in the hub. Hope this helps, Walt

RE: balancing props?

Since this is about balancing props, I bought one of Just engines new Jen"C carbonfiber props with a hardwood core. It was perfectly balanced when recieved as they claimed and remained so when I enlarged the hole. These are great looking props with a white front and light purple writing on them with a black back. I placed it on my SuperTigre 3000 Diesel and the hub did not compress one bit, at least not visibly. It is a 19x10.
