GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
Ok, I have a g26 in a GP Super Stearman and all of my electronics are at least 15 inches from the engine. I have a JR slimline 700 reciever. And when I have the engine running and do a ground check with the antenna down I get about 20ft away and it will start glitching. Elevator rudder ect. I called Horizon and they said to check my reciever, I checked and all ok. Since I had it in another plane I knew it was ok anyway. I bought it new also. So, they said that the engine needs to be rebearinged. ??? I know it is under waranty but I just hate to take it apart. They also said that the 700 reciever even though not PCM would work fine. What should I do or what elso could I check for?

If Horizon feels the motor needs work, then get it done. Apparently this is a known problem.
Have you tried a different receiver? Is your throttle servo on the firewall, or back with the rest of the electronics? Check for a cut or worn spot in the plug lead also. One other thing, plug the flight battery directly into the receiver,(to by-pass the switch) & run it. Sometimes a worn switch will cause glitching when the engine sets up a vibration. |

The "rebearinged" line is pretty hard to swallow, I ain't buy'n it. There's got to be some other answer. What say you RCIGN1 ???

I am not to familiar with this engine, but what I have heard often was that with this kind of engine (spark plug) it is recommended to avoid any metal to metal connection on throttle...and maybe some vibrations can also give the same kind of problems on other control connection. Don't know, just what I heard..Is this engine with electronic ignition?

Make sure you are using a resistor spark plug. (An R in the type name)
Make sure all of the screws on the engine are tight. Check all of the receiver components for vibration sensitivity. |
RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
Re Bearinged ? No way....Check the red wire where it pushes into the connector between the 2 coils, and check the tightness of the screws holding the spark coil on, the top one is the ground...If you have another gasser try switching spark plugs, sometimes a dirty spark plug will cause glitching....:D

OK a general statement about RFI and other grimlins
Do an antenna down range check with the engine off, this is your base line. GO UNTIL THE PLANE GLITCHES NOT JUST 100FT OR SO. Do an antenna down range check with the engine running, a 10% difference is good 15% OK and 20% bad. Tipically an RFI problem shows up like a 50% reduction in range. VIBRATION tipically shows up, like you can only get 20ft before problem develops Vibration can effect batteries, switches, servos and RX . Of course if the engine ain't running then there ain't any vibrations:D |
RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
I am using a flexrod or plastic rod for throttle. I will check all the bolts n stuff. I am going to try all of this tomorrow. This is a brand new engine. With original plug. They asked that too. I am going to add extra foam to my battery and receiver too. And try to mount them even farther back. This is my first gasser and only one too. Also my throttle servo is where the other servos are. Factory set. Along with that plastic rod.

Upgrade to JRs' 9 channel PCM receiver, I had the same problem with a ZDZ 50 and it has a shielded electronic ignition. I insulated everything and made sure there was no metal to metal, no vibration issues. etc. and it took the PCM receiver to solve the problem. The one thing I didn't try was to use chokes on the servo leads. Put the PCM in and all the problems went away.

they mentiond a 700 pcm like my slimline 700 only a pcm. shouldnt that work? I dont need a 9ch.

RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
crashland 73, you could also try a Hitec rcvr. They are dual conversion versus the JR single conversion. There is a local club that can only fly dual conversion rcvr's at there field due to interference. Futaba systems work fine but a JR system will have problems until the put a d-c rcvr in.

RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
PCM will only mask the RF interference problem, it's still there being created something. With PCM your betting that the receiver will ignore it, and it probably will ,,,,,,,, for a while.

Why not get it right with the 700 so there are no glitches and then swap it out for a PCM unit and you have the best of both worlds. BTW, the 700 works fine with gas motors, at least with a G23, Fugi 32 and Brison 2.4. The 770 is the PCM version. Ed M. |
RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
Well I tried everything today. I even pulled all the electronics out and layed them on the ground and direct battery plugin. I got about 47 paces away and started to get interference within a foot or two of that. So now what?

RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
Start replacing, or removing each component one at a time untill you locate the problem, or try another receiver. Could still be a problem with the motor.

I had rf noise problems on all my zenoahs until I added the Bosch shielded plug cap.

How you gonna squeeze one of those big ugly things down on the little RZ7C spark plug ?:D

Beauty is in the eye of beholder! If it works, I like it.

RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
I have never seen a Zenoah that needed a Bosch cap. But then, there are no more than about 20 Zenoahs at our field. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing one on a Zenoah at any fly-in or contest I have attended.
I think based on your description, that you have a vibration issue. Also check antenna routing. I have seen 2 cases where an antenna run inside the fuse caused a large amouts of glitching with the engine running. After changing the antenna to the tip of the stab or rudder, problem went away. Just keep plugging away, you will find the problem, & Good Luck with your first flights. |

Iwannafly, my post was a dig at TKG...Anyway, the bosch cap will not fit on the 10mm spark plug used in the G26..There is NO shielded cap made for the 10mm resistor spark plugs....

RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
The REST of the story..There is no shielded cap for a 10 mm RESISTOR spark plug..There are three 10mm resistor plugs currently available , ChampionRZ7C, NGK CMR6, and Denso..The Denso is the longest, the Champion is next, and the NGK is the shortest...
The 10 mm non resistor CMR6 is the plug used by DA, 3W, and most European engines..The DA has the BEST shielded cap, 3W next, and the European next..C&H makes a machined cap for the 10mm CMR6 non resistor spark plug...The European shields are for the CMR6 non resistor plug.. There thousands of Zenoah, Quadra, and chainsaw/weedeater conversions flying around out there with nothing but a rubber cap on the RESISTOR spark plug...:D NGK makes a resistor cap for the 10mm CMR6 plugs, two versions, NO SHIELD on either one... One comes off the plug at a 90 degree angle, the other at about 100 degrees...Some Honda dealers can find these in their parts books, they're used on some Honda products.. the part # for the 90 degree cap is LC056EFK.. The resistor cap will NOT stay on the CMR6 non resistor plug, the ends are different from the resistor plugs... A non resistor plug can be used on a G26 if you buy a cap and wire from DA and adapt it to the Zenoah coil, but the plug wire on the Zenoah coil is molded in and can be hard to remove to connect the DA wire...C&H has a coil almost identical to the Zenoah coil except for the molded in spark plug wire, it might work... Bottom line ? Find the cause of the interference or vibration problem, it's likely not the spark plug...[8D] The red wire from the source coil plugs into the spark coil behind the engine...Check the tightness of the connection, it's almost too short and could be loose and an intermittent connection will cause interference.... |
RE: GasZenoah 26 engine in plane causing rf glitching HELP!!!
No a Stock Bosch will not fit a CMR7A. But you can make a spacer out of 1/2' id alimium tubing. Swedge it over a 5/8" nut and slit the side. Presto 5/8" to 3/4" adapter. We have these also.:D
