plug ????

Ok, how can you tell when its bad? Can these plugs handle carbon and fouling and still run like new after cleaning. The reason for this post is becouse I have a bme 50 that i cant get to run right. Ive chased the needles every wich way and cant get it to be smooth. Is it hard to check timing on these engines to see if it has moved from factory? Sorry to sound like a dumb***** but this thing is driving me crazy. I couldnt do the maiden on my new wildhare becouse it ran so bad. This is my first gasser and nobody at our field can help I can tune any little 2 stroke nitro engine this thing should be easier to tune there not complex at all. I get a lag on throttle up from idle and then it runs fine very snappy until it idles for a minute then the lag is back. It tends to idle down low until i clean it out if i lean the low end it hangs high and then drops down if i richen any the delay gets worse.I dont want to send it back just to tune it or have them tell me i have a bad plug nobody in austin stocks the ngk 6 plugs so im going to order a bunch and see what happens. Any help would be great sorry about the grammer im frustrated

Using a little punctuation here and there to denote the beginning and end of a sentence makes it a lot easier for someone to read your post and offer a respectful or thoughtful reply.

I don't think you have a lemon, That's a rare thing to have occur. In all likelyhood, the engine has not broken in enough to maintain a steady and reliable idle and mid-range. Gassers can sometimes take 5 gallons of gas or more during the break in to become reliable. The mixture settings also require a fine touch in the adjustment. Very small changes will have very large effects in gassers.

If the plug(s) are loaded up with carbon deposits after short periods of running, it indicates that you are using waaay too much oil in the mix. Are you mixing per BME or per the instructions on the bottle from the oil manufacturer? Stay with BME recommendations if you are mixing at other than their suggestions.

Also make certain that your ignition battery is fully charged and in good enough of a condition to provide a reliable spark.

You have to keep in mind that these engines are very simple devices. Hundreds of thousands of chain saws, weed wackers, blowers and other stuff is sold every year with these engines - that just plain run - and many for years with no maintenance - except when the owner does something they shouldn't. My new Stihl chainsaw ran right out of the box from the dealer - it has cut up about two cords of wood so far - and I haven't had to change a thing. The aircraft engines we buy are about the same - they should run forever when set up - and set up isn't that hard. Yes, you need a good spark plug - whenever my John Deere starts to act up, I put in $4.00 worth of spark plugs and off it goes for another year. Same with my 3W or BME or DA. Use fresh fuel with the proper oil mix. You need to understand how the low and high needles interact - and then set them using a tachometer. You would be amazed at how many fellow modelors have been surprised at how far off their ears are from my tachometer when I pull it out - gas and glow. One you have an initial set, make adjustments slowly. Yesterday, my 3W80 was rich at full out - 1/16 of a turn brought it right in where it should be. Just take it slow and one step at a time and you will get it running where it should be - that BME 50 is a real jewel - my buddy has two of them on a DC3.

Silversurfer, I understand you about my grammer I type with one finger so its very slow. Im thinking it is beyond the needles and into the ignition. This is the second ignition for this engine the first one was heat sensetive and the second one is intermident. Ive been able to get it correct a few times and go home satified but then the next weekend out it runs funny. I mean upon start up it wont rev up and when it does it takes 30-45 seconds this is after its warm of course. Im getting to where it just upsets me to try and adjust it. I can get it so so some times but others it just pops and sputters and runs like crap even at the stock settings. The gas is fresh the gap is .022 -.025 ive tried all gaps and no difference it acks like the timing is to retarded at idle sometimes thats what ive been told Im going to send it in just to have a piece of mind I dont trust it anymore if kieth gives it a clean bill of health I will keep trying to tune or look at my setup on the plane. I understand how to tune the engine I just cant keep it running the same every time I fly 90 size 3d helis and have been flying for years with nitro engines it took time to learn those engines but now its easy I was hoping this wasnt that much diffrent. thanks for the feedback guys I read my first post and wow it looks bad (grammer)

Jeremy, here is a free spell checker that I always try to remember to use. It makes me look smarter than I am. This was a post from the RCU Administrator.

Good luck with your engine.
Ken

"To all those who have been going through spell check withdrawal I have located a solution which is better than the old checker.

This will work the best and is far superior than the old spell checker.

Download this IE browser extension. It is safe, it works and I have tested it.

You install it and then when you are in any text box you can right click to check spelling. It has user dictionaries and much more.

It is FREE."

I feel a 100 times better, I talked to keith at bme and it is getting shipped back fixxed. The problem was the ignition wires at the deans connector the solder tabs were broke and making interemitent contact. I had it zip tied to the engine mount and vibration caused the problem (i wont do that again) he also found the futaba battery connector not making good contact with the switch so i will solder that to the switch for good. Now I will be able to fly my new wildhare extra this weekend.:D:D:D:D
