DA ignition module
 

The ignition module of my DA 50 is not firing any sparks and the engine doesn't start, this is on a brand new engine.
I have two questions;
1st I have a 3w ignition laying around are they interchangeable can it be used on the DA 50?

2nd How can I narrow down the problem to be 100% sure that it is the ignition that is broken and not something else?

I need a replay ASAP because I only have 13 hours to fix the plane.

Well if it isnt sparking it definitely has something to do with the ignition. If the magnet on the hub has the right pole exposed then I assume the 3w ign would work as long as you can mount the switch. Try waving the pulse switch around the magnet on the hub, with a plug in the boot and earthed and the ignition attached to a battery, also check your ign battery's and switch's.

How things there is it peaceful?

Pull the plug reinsert into the ignition plug switch your ignition on and off, if it sparks as you turn the ignition on and off and not when you rotate the prop the timing pickup is bad.
If you get no spark either way then the ignition is bad or you have a battery/switch problem. The 3W ignition will work as good as the DA ignition you just have to match the plugs
on the timing pickup. Hope this helps.

The problem is not on the switch, I am using a JR heavy duty switch and used a voltmeter to check that it is working. the battery is also fully charged

Do you know what is the polarity on the timing pick up for the DA and 3w?

I think what k5mog is saying is if you get a spark when you switch on and not when you turn the prop your switch is the problem. if you dont get a spark no matter what you do the ing has had it.

Interesting enough, I used the voltmeter on the ignition for curiosity and it was reading 2.23 volts with the battery for the ignition plug out of the system! why? where is the current coming from?

there are capacitors in there. it is a cdi(capacitive discharge ignition)

I am not sure of the specifics with regards to the polarity but with my C-H ignition the switch only works one way round.

The 3W ignition will work just fine on the DA. Of course you'll have to use the 3W pickup on the nose of the crank. Mount it in the same position as the DA pickup.

The 3W and DA pickups are not hall sensors, so turning the prop slowly will not generate a spark..take the plug out and flip the prop fast, as in starting, to see if it sparks...Put the spark plug in the socket when you try this, and watch carefully, a .015 spark is hard to see....The plug is grounded through the outer braid on the wire and does not have to be touching the engine...[8D]
Also be sure you have the polarity right on the connections, it won't work very long, if at all, with + and - reversed......

DA50 have some proplem with sansor. check the sansor!:)

Hi All
I also had ignition problem with my 3W-24 .
I had good battery and good switch.
the probelm was bad sensor.

The problem was bad sensor.
TDI check the following with normal sense NO special tools.

1.After connecting the plugs with the spark plug not in the engine head switch on and off the switch of the ignition if you see spark , the unit is OK .
2.If you have coil sensor try to flip the prop few times (like when you try to start ) any spark? If yes then you are OK and maybe need little adjustment even moving the sensor back and forward to ensure spark on the right location.
3. If you have hall sensor you can do this without prop flipping.

Thanks to everyone for your help and ideas,
I took the ignition and sensor form the DA 50 and installed a 3w ignition and pick up sensor, as I was working at 2:00 am was very easy to see if the thing was sparking or not just had to switch off the lights;)
Went to the field on sunday and the engine popped on the 3rd flip and started 5 flips later, PERFECT[8D] (brand new motor). Had 3 flights and the combo worked flawless (DA motor 3w ignition)

I bought a DL ignition for twins, to replace the DA. The module works just fine on any DL pickup switch, but refuses to work on the DA switch
Does anyone know the difference in the three wires between a Da pickup, and DL?
The readings on continuety seems to be reversed between white and red. I switched it but still no results.

Don't worry you can buy a hall effect sesor that will fit the DA.

DLE's (made by RCxel) are very different in design, so the DA pickup coil will not operate it.

One of the guys on here sells and manufactures a pickup sensor you can use.

I will have to lookup who it is though.

the DA uses a pick up coil instead of hall sensor like pretty much all the other ignitions. the lead to the coil has three wires but only two are actually hooked up to anything.

I am having the same problem with my DA 50. If i charge my 6 volt battery to 6.7 and i then connect it to the ignition module, will it fry or damage the module because of the high volts? any help please, im dying to fly!

Ok, very cool accessary. I still need to know if 6.7 volts will damage the ignition module. Im getting no spark and i fear that this is the problem.

Over voltage will kill a lot of ignitions
